Square Enix is officially disclosing details regarding the Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake for Nintendo Switch and its potential successor, but there’s a bit of a downside: Square Enix won’t be offering any upgrade options, whether free or paid, between the various console versions. Essentially, each version will stand independently.
Initially discovered by Wario64, Square officially announced that there is no planned upgrade for Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake, as stated in a FAQ on their Japanese website. In simpler terms, they don’t plan to offer an upgrade, so you should buy the version suitable for the system you prefer to play it on. Additionally, it was mentioned that the performance of the Switch version on the upcoming Switch 2 will remain unchanged, suggesting that if you want a (presumably slight) visual improvement, you may need to purchase the latest release of the game.
Many fans have expressed disappointment about the news regarding the Switch 2’s key cards for Dragon Quest remakes, as some people have raised issues and doubts surrounding them. These key cards are used in the Switch 2 version of the games, but they don’t actually store the game data themselves – instead, they grant a single-use permission to download the game digitally from Nintendo’s servers. On the other hand, the original Switch version of the game comes on a traditional cartridge that contains all the necessary game files.
Enthusiastic players were anticipating the possibility of purchasing a Switch edition, priced comparably, and potentially securing a free or reduced cost upgrade – a practice often seen in cross-generation games. Given that Square Enix is offering an upgrade option for its other major remake of the year, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, it’s noteworthy that this game isn’t getting a Switch 2 release on its own.
As a gamer, I was stoked to learn that completing Dragon Quest III’s remake on my Nintendo Switch would let me carry over my data to a future Switch 2 edition of Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake. However, there’s a catch – I can’t transfer my progress between the different versions of the latter games, whether I start on my current Switch and move to Switch 2, or vice versa. Bummer!
The remastered versions of Dragon Quest I and II, titled “Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake,” are set to launch on various platforms including Nintendo Switch 2 (if it exists), regular Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and personal computers, starting October 30.
