In the second episode of the second season of Doctor Who, we witnessed the comeback of the Deities of Chaos’ Pantheon. Ever since Russell T Davies started his new tenure, the Doctor has encountered cosmic forces beyond our universe, manifesting as gods. This narrative shift introduced a chilling scenario where the gods commenced their reign of terror with “The Giggle” in 2023, releasing the Toymaker into the universe. The iconic antagonist instigated the Doctor’s initial bi-generational conflict, splitting David Tennant’s Fourteenth Doctor from Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor. Despite defeating the Toymaker, he foretold the arrival of his armies.
In hot pursuit, the Toymaker’s troops swiftly trailed behind him, venturing into the Doctor’s realm in the 2023 ‘Doctor Who’ Christmas special titled “The Church on Ruby Road.” Here, the Fifteenth Doctor and companion Ruby Sunday confronted a swarm of goblins that originated from outside the universe. Then, the second episode of Season 1, “The Devil’s Chord,” showcased the Toymaker’s offspring, Maestro, who claimed the title of the God of Music. Later in that season, it was Maestro who threatened all of time and space with the Doctor’s TARDIS, wielding death itself. Now, Season 2 has introduced another deity from the Pantheon: Lux Imperator, the God of Light.
Who Is Lux, Doctor Who’s God of Light?
The Newest Member of Doctor Who’s Pantheon had a Surprising Introduction
In the latest episode of “Doctor Who”, the new deity exhibited the full capacity of the omnipotent beings from other dimensions. This god, called “Lux”, made an appearance at the cinema where most of the story unfolded, seemingly speaking to the audience as a cartoon character. As the viewers tried to comprehend how this cartoon could perceive and interact with them, Mr. Ring-a-Ding emerged from the screen into our world. When the Doctor and Belinda Chandra eventually broke into the now vacant cinema to probe the disappearance of the audience and the ongoing movies, they encountered Mr. Ring-a-Ding still residing there.
Currently standing at just two feet tall, Mr. Ring-a-Ding left both Doctor and Belinda spellbound. The Doctor suddenly figured out that this animated character was composed entirely of light, springing to life. In their conversation with the TARDIS duo, Mr. Ring-a-Ding kept repeating his signature phrase: “Please don’t make me laugh.” After some contemplation, the Doctor inquired about why they should refrain from laughing at him. It was then that the cartoon character unveiled a chilling resemblance to his laugh – the very same rising and falling arpeggio as the Toymaker’s laugh, which had once been utilized for brainwashing mankind in “The Giggle.
In Season 1 of Doctor Who, the true identity of Maestro, known as Mr. Ring-a-Ding, was unveiled as Lux Imperator, a god and child of the Toymaker. Upon hearing his unique, melodious laugh, it was also disclosed that his real name was Lux Imperator to both the Doctor and Belinda.
Lux, being a representation of light, took this concept to an unprecedented level by literally consisting of light itself. He attempted to exploit the Doctor to create a new physical form for himself, utilizing the regeneration energy of the Time Lord’s regenerations as fuel. However, he was ultimately defeated when he began absorbing the light of the sun, eventually being consumed by all the light in the universe and merging with light itself.
How Lux is Connected to the Toymaker
Doctor Who’s New God Hinted at The Toymaker’s Influence
In “The Giggle”, the Toymaker made his return to the series since 1966’s “The Celestial Toymaker”. Back then, the villain had clashed with the First Doctor in a reality known as the Celestial Toyroom. However, unlike the previous encounter where the Doctor visited the Toymaker’s realm, this time it was the Toymaker who managed to escape his own universe for the first time. This seemed to have been made possible by the Doctor using superstition and playing a game with the Not-Things at the border of reality in “Wild Blue Yonder”.
It appeared that the Toymaker’s reappearance created a gateway for other deities to enter the universe. Yet, in “Lux”, it seemed as though the Doctor hinted that the Toymaker’s influence was still present among these gods.
After listening to Lux chuckle, he commented, “They seem to view everything as a game.” This remark suggests that Lux’s antics might be an extension of the Toymaker, who was often referred to as the ‘God of Games.’ In the Doctor Who series,
The Gods of Doctor Who’s Pantheon, So Far
- The Toymaker (“The Celestial Toymaker,” “The Giggle”)
- Sutekh (“Pyramids of Mars,” “The Legend of Ruby Sunday”/”Empire of Death”)
- The Mara (“Kinda,” “Snakedance”)
- The Trickster (The Sarah Jane Adventures — “Whatever Happened to Sarah Jane?,” “The Temptation of Sarah Jane Smith,” “The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith”)
- Maestro (“The Devil’s Chord”)
- Lux Imperator (“Lux”)
It’s plausible that despite the Doctors expulsion from the universe during “The Giggle,” the Mastermind of Games might continue orchestrating his plans through his offspring and subordinates within the Pantheon. Lux, well-versed in the Doctor’s history with the Pantheon, identified the Doctor as the nemesis of the Toymaker, destroyer of Maestro, and slayer of the God of Death. Upon discovering the potential to construct a body, Lux proposed that the other gods might have preserved the Doctor as part of a larger scheme orchestrated by the Light God. This implies that the gods may be more knowledgeable about each other’s actions than it initially seems, and could be working towards a common grand design. The Toymaker may not only have set the stage for the other gods but also continue to pull strings from behind the curtains.
The Future of the Gods of Chaos in Doctor Who
The Doctor and Belinda Could Meet Gods Old and New
In both “Lux” and “The Devil’s Chord”, there were hints suggesting a relationship with the Toymaker. Maestro explicitly acknowledged being one of his children, while the Doctor’s mention of Lux playing a game seemed to imply another connection to the Toymaker. The fact that they both share the Toymaker’s distinctive laugh adds weight to this theory. Since the Toymaker wasn’t the leader of the Pantheon (that role was held by Sutekh), other deities mimicking his laugh suggests a unique bond with him, beyond just being Gods of Chaos. The appearance of both Maestro and Lux in the Doctor’s universe may indicate that the Toymaker still holds some sway over this reality, potentially paving the way for his comeback.
In the conclusion of “The Giggle,” the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Doctors outsmarted the Toymaker in a round of catch. As per the terms of their game, the Toymaker was obligated to fulfill the Doctors’ prize wish, which was his expulsion from the entire universe. The Toymaker plummeted into a container that enclosed his personal reality, securely tucked away within a UNIT vault and sealed with salt. While it’s possible for him to reappear due to the presence of his prison somewhere deep within UNIT HQ, for now, only powerful deities like Maestro and Lux can potentially break the Toymaker’s banishment if they wish to help him escape, as he is bound by the Doctors’ victory over him in the game.
In the upcoming season of “Doctor Who,” it appears that the Toymaker may make his return. However, he won’t be the only challenge for the Doctor, Belinda Chandra, and Ruby Sunday. One episode in Season 2 will take the Doctor and Belinda to the Interstellar Song Contest, a place where fans speculate could feature Mrs. Flood. This season might also unveil the true nature of the enigmatic Mrs. Flood. With her threats to wage war in Heaven and seemingly being able to see beyond the fourth wall and predict the Doctor’s future, there’s a possibility that Mrs. Flood could be another member of the Pantheon.
Every Saturday, you can stream new episodes of Doctor Who on BBC iPlayer within the UK, while international viewers can enjoy it on Disney+ (where it’s accessible).
