Until Dawn Movie Director Almost Didn’t Sign On After Receiving Death Threats For Shazam 2

In theaters currently is the upcoming video game adaptation, “Until Dawn”. Interestingly, director David F. Sandberg nearly declined this project. In a recent interview, he shared that he contemplated abandoning film projects based on intellectual properties (IP) following the harsh reception and even death threats he received after his superhero movie, “Shazam: Fury of the Gods”.

Essentially, Sandberg expressed that fans can become extremely passionate, even to the point of anger, towards you. This could lead to threats of harm and other unpleasant experiences. Following Shazam 2, he admitted feeling reluctant about making another film based on an existing intellectual property due to these potential risks.

Instead, Sandberg expressed his enthusiasm for the Until Dawn script, stating it seemed like “a lot of fun” to work on. More specifically, he was drawn to the movie’s unique narrative structure, which revolves around a time loop where the characters must confront a new horror scenario each evening.

He pointed out that the writers cleverly incorporated a time loop scenario, where each night resets, providing a sense of immersion similar to playing the game over again with various decisions. He believes this aspect is true to the essence of the game.

Upon the announcement of the Until Dawn movie, some viewers expressed concerns because it wasn’t a literal representation of the game but rather a fresh narrative. Nevertheless, Sandberg pointed out that adhering to the game’s story would also have presented its own unique difficulties.

He expressed that attempting to remake the game might have invited a lot of negative feedback since people could argue, “It’s not as impressive. It’s not with the original cast, as they are older now,” he explained. In essence, it would be challenging to surpass the original game, putting you at a disadvantage instead.

Currently available for purchase, Until Dawn was developed at an estimated cost of 15 million dollars. Predictions suggest it could generate up to 10 million dollars within the U.S. market alone during its first weekend, based on box office projections.
