Vegapunk has been around long before the Egghead Arc, and his inventions are widely available and beneficial to a multitude of people. As the foremost scientist in the One Piece universe, he is not only powerful but well-connected as well. Given that Vegapunk serves the World Government, it’s somewhat unexpected to see how many ties he has with adversaries of this very government. Nevertheless, his ultimate aim of offering free energy worldwide is admirable and doesn’t adhere strictly to any single faction. Vegapunk’s questionable morals have also played a role in shaping his intricate relationships.
For the first time, one of Vegapunk’s inventions is clearly highlighted during the Alabasta Saga. Remarkably, Baroque Works obtained an artifact capable of consuming a Devil Fruit. Despite his numerous connections, Vegapunk’s work spans across various regions in the world. Even secluded Wano shares a link with Vegapunk through the SMILEs. This underscores not only Vegapunk’s significance in influencing his environment but also the persistent motif that secrecy and isolation are impossible to maintain within the anime universe.
Monkey D. Dragon Founded the Revolutionary Army
Dragon Has Ideological Differences with Vegapunk
Vegapunk openly acknowledges his friendship with Monkey D. Dragon. Since Vegapunk aims to aid people, he doesn’t disagree with the principles of the Revolutionary Army. However, their coldness towards each other remains a barrier. Vegapunk won’t join the Revolutionary Army because they can’t provide sufficient funds for his research expenses.
It appears that Dragon would likely take issue with Vegapunk’s creations, such as the Pacifista and Seraphim, given their roles within the World Government. However, it’s important to note that there are complex factors at play in both scenarios. Regardless, it’s clear that Vegapunk has caused significant damage.
Interestingly, Dragon and Vegapunk share a secret regarding Ohara’s knowledge and have a deep affection for the island itself. They both recognize Professor Clover’s work as crucial and worthy of continuation. Intriguingly, it was Dragon who recommended Vegapunk to Bartholomew Kuma.
Bartholomew Kuma Trusted Vegapunk with Jewelry Bonney
Vegapunk Could Not Save Kuma From Saturn
Pursued Vegapunk as he was the one who made her father a cyborg, but Kuma consented to the transformation in order to save his own daughter. In return, Vegapunk offered to clone Kuma if he provided services for healing Bonney. The two had a friendly relationship that could have continued undisturbed if not for Jaygarcia Saturn’s meddling. During the Elbaph Arc, Lilith is particularly driven to restore Kuma after all that has happened.
On Egghead Island, Bonney spent a substantial amount of time alongside Vegapunk as he was tending to her healing. Despite cherishing those moments, her feelings for him change drastically upon learning about her father’s existence. Yet, despite this revelation, she desires his demise. However, Vegapunk values Bonney’s safety so highly that he’d jeopardize his own wellbeing to keep her safe. To him, she’s merely a young girl in need of assistance. After witnessing her father’s memories, Bonney reconciles with Vegapunk and is prepared to aid in his schemes.
Jaygarcia Saturn of the Five Elders Oversaw Vegapunk’s Work
Vegapunk Protested Saturn’s Cruelty
For the very first time, I crossed paths with the Five Elders, an esteemed group in the Grand Line, all thanks to the Ibel Peace Prize I received for my innovative flower bullets. At that initial meeting, I harbored no ill feelings towards the Celestial Dragons, but my perspective shifted drastically as I gained more insights into their ways. It didn’t exactly improve matters that I had previously been incarcerated due to my experimental work. With each subsequent encounter with Saturn, our rapport deteriorated significantly.
As a fervent admirer, I can’t help but observe that Saturn views Vegapunk as merely a lesser entity, one he’s ready to dispose of and replace at a moment’s notice. Time and again, Vegapunk has clashed with Saturn, most notably for the sake of Kuma, demonstrating his unwavering resolve when his feelings align correctly. However, in the Egghead Island Arc, Saturn labels Vegapunk a traitor and seeks his demise, making it clear that he holds no regard for Vegapunk’s life. Yet, the fact that York aspires to become a Celestial Dragon speaks volumes about Vegapunk’s greed outweighing his moral qualms.
Kizaru is One of Vegapunk’s Old Friends
Borsalino Worked with Vegapunk Later in Life
At an early stage in their careers and with lower ranks, Kizaru crossed paths with Vegapunk. As Vegapunk took up a position within the Marines, they spent considerable time together, with Sentomaru also playing a part in their relationship. Intriguingly, Kizaru allowed Vegapunk to examine his devil fruit, aiming to replicate some of its abilities. This exploration ultimately led to the Pacifista soldiers possessing laser-shooting capabilities. Incidentally, this research unwittingly provided Franky with a similar power as well.
In the marine hierarchy, Vegapunk and Kizaru grew increasingly apart. Though they served the same organization, Vegapunk harbored doubts about the World Government, a concern that Kizaru didn’t share as deeply. Regarding Kuma being transformed into a cyborg, their views greatly differed, which further strained their relationship. However, this tension didn’t prevent Kizaru from attacking Egghead or ending Vegapunk’s life. Despite these actions, it’s evident that Kizaru is tormented and mourning over the turn of events.
Sentomaru Chose Vegapunk Over the Marines and Kizaru
Sentomaru’s Conviction Stems From Loyalty
At a tender age, Sentomaru crossed paths with Vegapunk. Despite being a robust child, his strength often left him secluded from others. However, Vegapunk recognized his potential and recruited Sentomaru as his bodyguard. To further refine Sentomaru’s skills, even Kizaru was enlisted to train him. Later in life, Sentomaru chose to serve in the Marines, but it was not the Marine organization that held his unwavering loyalty. Rather, it was his long-standing relationship with Vegapunk, forged during their shared youth, that remained paramount in his heart.
In the assault against Egghead, Sentomaru decides to side with Vegapunk instead of remaining loyal to the marines. Vegapunk’s promise to protect Sentomaru from his past, which holds significant weight for him, influences this decision. Additionally, the civilians on the island may have played a role in swaying Sentomaru as well. This action signifies that Sentomaru aligns himself with Vegapunk rather than Kizaru, but it’s evident that Kizaru continues to hold affection and respect towards Sentomaru.
Vegapunk Sought Ohara’s Knowledge Through Clou D. Clover and Jaguar D. Saul
Vegapunk Continued Clover’s Research in Secret
Vegapunk was near enough to Clou D. Clover to discover the archaeologist’s true name. Although they didn’t become as close, Saul permitted Vegapunk to peruse the books from Ohara. Vegapunk holds Saul in high regard due to his role in preserving that knowledge. He learned about Saul’s involvement only after visiting Ohara’s scholars, particularly Clover, to pay respects.
Clover was a person whom Vegapunk admired, not just for his intelligence but also his courage. He was the one who first recalled Clover based on his criminal past and arrests. The demise of Clover significantly impacted Vegapunk and propelled him into studying the Void Century, despite its risks under the World Government’s watch. It is possible that Vegapunk’s encounters with these two individuals may have influenced how he dealt with Nico Robin.
Stussy Was Vegapunk’s Deep Cover Agent
MADS Made Stussy but Didn’t Have Her Loyalty
While the specific MADS team members who primarily worked on cloning are not defined, both Vegapunk and Vinsmoke Judge are currently engaged in cloning research in contemporary times. Stussy, the first clone produced by MADS, has a complex history with multiple contributors, but she is particularly devoted to Vegapunk. Known for her exceptional skills as a spy and assassin, she is actively involved in various areas. Her loyalty remains unwavering despite her achievements, and she consistently chooses to stand by Vegapunk.
Stussy successfully gained access into Cipher Pol and secured a position within Aegis 0. Through her time there, Stussy developed genuine respect for her fellow Cipher Pol agents. Despite spending numerous decades operating undercover, she discards this disguise when it’s crucial to safeguard Vegapunk. She goes as far as risking her own life to shield him from danger. Although Stussy grapples with personal worth struggles centered around Vegapunk, she ultimately lends a hand to the Straw Hat Pirates following his demise.
Vegapunk Was the Star of MADS
NEO MADS Forms in Spite of Vegapunk
A team of researchers, spearheaded by Vegapunk, coalesced into a single unit. Among its ranks were Judge, Caesar Clown, Queen the Plague, Miss Buckin, along with two unnamed scientists. Officially, this group was known as the Laboratory for Peace, but in reality, only Vegapunk pursued that objective. Eventually, the World Government decided to dismantle their operation, and each member went separate ways to pursue their individual agendas.
Manga Debut | Anime Debut | Japanese Voice Actor | English Voice Actor | |
---|---|---|---|---|
Vegapunk | Chapter 1066 | Episode 1096 | Yōhei Tadano; Yoshito Yasuhara (Episode 610) | Kent Williams |
Buckingham Stussy | Chapter 802 | Episode 752 | Reiko Suzuki | Erica Schroeder |
Caesar Clown | Chapter 658 | Episode 581 | Ryūsei Nakao | Jerry Jewell |
Vinsmoke Judge | Chapter 832 | Episode 793 | Hideyuki Hori | Christopher Bevins |
Queen the Plague (Scien) | Chapter 925 | Episode 918 | Hiroki Takahashi | Major Attaway |
The individuals in MADS generally have a strained relationship, particularly Casaer and Judge who accuse Vegapunk of their setbacks. Consequently, they established NEO MADS during the current timeline. This new group managed to produce clones and separate the Lineage Factor. Notably, this Lineage Factor served as the foundation for Caesar’s SAD, Vegapunk’s Green Blood, and later developments. In a bold move, Caesar seized control of Vegapunk’s former lab on Punk Hazard.
The Straw Hat Crew Aim to Save Vegapunk
The Straw Hat Pirates Carry His Hope for the Future
In their initial encounter, Vegapunk isn’t hesitant to ask for help from the Straw Hat Pirates to save his life. Although the Satellites tend to be wary of them, Vegapunk seems unfazed. Given the renowned exploits of the Straw Hat Crew that echo across the globe, it’s clear where Vegapunk obtained his intelligence about them. Furthermore, his relationships with Dragon and Clover may have played a role in this decision. This choice proves wise as the Straw Hats are deeply committed to their cause, even if they don’t ultimately succeed.
Of all the Straw Hat crew members, Luffy, Robin, and Franky get closest to Vegapunk. Luffy often interacts with him the most, captivating Vegapunk with his Gear Fifth form. He also reveals Saul’s survival to Robin, who, like him, carries on Clover’s legacy in uncovering mysteries from the Void Century. Franky doesn’t have many interactions with Vegapunk but has long admired the scientist. After the time skip, Franky incorporates Vegapunk’s technology into his designs, leaving an impression on the scientist.
Due to his extensive network of relationships, Vegapunk becomes an indispensable figure, garnering even more fame and influence than he would have without the World Government’s employment. His status as the world’s most renowned scientist is largely attributed to these connections. Although he harbors a genuine desire to improve people’s lives, his own imperfections and limitations drive him to commit questionable acts. If Vegapunk were not so multifaceted, he wouldn’t have become as significant to so many individuals.
