As we draw near to the arrival of Season 6 of The Handmaid’s Tale, which will be its final chapter, I can’t help but hope for some clarity regarding the enigmatic adversaries from Season 5 – Alanis and Ryan Wheeler.
The dystopian Hulu show is approaching its conclusion following eight years of television that often stirred up anger, leaving many unanswered questions. Questions like: What became of Emily? Will Nick ultimately suffer the repercussions of his actions? And will June manage to reunite with Hannah?
It seems that the storyline involving Emily may remain unresolved due to Alexis Bledel leaving the series permanently. However, there are many other threads left to tie up and even a hint of a major upheaval, as suggested by the Season 6 trailer’s teaser.
Regarding Serena in Season 5, the finale implies that she’ll be starting a fresh life with Noah. However, will she remain safe? That could be uncertain if the Wheelers are involved, given their significant influence. Yet, it’s crucial to discover who assisted them in reaching such a position.
How did the Wheelers gain so much power?
In Season 5, The Wheelers didn’t initially become part of The Handmaid’s Tale. However, their impact seems substantial, both within Gilead and Canada. Yet, the details about how they ascended to such a powerful position or who in Gilead they are allied with remain unclear for now.
The enigma grows as Mrs. Wheeler asserts that her spouse isn’t accountable to the Commanders. This could imply that they’re functioning on a distinct plane, possibly one where they are exempt from both Gileadian and Canadian legal jurisdiction.
Without a doubt, they find themselves in an extraordinary circumstance. Alanis and Ryan Wheeler, a married couple from Canada, strictly follow the rigorous beliefs of Gilead. Notably, it’s Ryan who governs No Man’s Land – a contested region that lies along the border between Canada and Gilead.
In the heart of Season 5, during Episode 5, I found myself facing an unexpected twist. Serena, freed from U.S. detention, was barred from returning to her homeland. This set the stage for a whole new chapter in our virtual world.
Instead, I’ve managed to create an emissary of Gilead within Canadian borders. However, when June unexpectedly appears at my doorstep, due to the impending birth of my child, I’m swiftly dispatched to the Wheelers for their protective custody.
She hadn’t anticipated it, but she found herself functioning more like a personal servant for them instead. Despite her attempts to carry on with her tasks, she frequently encountered obstacles from the couple, particularly Alanis.
Following Serena’s escape and fatal shooting of her chauffeur/protector Ezra, she gives birth to Noah. However, she gets apprehended by the Canadian military before long. Noah, her child, is subsequently separated from her… eventually finding his way into the care of the Wheeler family.
This demonstrates yet another instance where they enjoy a unique blend of liberties and restrictions. As Canadian citizens, they experience more freedom than they would in Gilead. Yet, they are also tied to the totalitarian regime and abide by its principles, while Ryan maintains significant influence over No Man’s Land.
Apart from eagerly anticipating the return of characters in The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6, I am equally excited to discover how they managed to establish themselves so strongly in the rival territories and if they plan to target Serena and Noah as well.
