Warning: SPOILERS for The Conners season 7, episode 6, “The Truck Stops Here.”
In simpler terms, it’s challenging for a series as expansive as The Conners to resolve all its unanswered questions within just a handful of episodes during its final season. Given the extensive cast of The Conners, there were numerous storylines that needed resolution before the grand conclusion. Roseanne’s death in The Conners was one of the major themes in season 7, but earlier seasons had laid the groundwork for several smaller plots that didn’t get enough attention as the finale approached.
The Conners series finale wasn’t completely unsatisfying, as some characters did get happy conclusions. The final episode particularly underscored the show’s consistent message about the importance of family during hardships. However, it can be challenging for a series with such themes to conclude in a manner that feels entirely conclusive. It would have been gratifying to see a few storylines tied up a bit more neatly than they were.
9. What Ever Happened To Beverly Harris?
Her Departure Always Seemed Problematic
Jackie’s complex relationship with her mother, Beverly, was extensively portrayed throughout the seasons, but they managed to resolve their issues before Beverly departed during season 6 of The Conners. Despite her deteriorating dementia, Beverly finds a positive resolution as she embarks on a train journey to explore the world while she can. This scene was touching, yet it raised concerns when one considered that she might forget her location and find herself lost or stranded in an unfamiliar place without family by her side.
To give The Conners a fair shake, Beverly’s departure from the show was subsequently addressed by Jackie disclosing she had been tracking her mom’s phone for safety reasons. This way, if something harmful happened to Beverly or she needed hospitalization, Jackie would be informed. Regrettably, in the last scenes of the series finale, Jackie admits that she no longer knows where her mother is. This remark serves as a joke, but it also implies that Jackie can’t confirm whether her mom is still alive or not. As a result, fans are left to create their own conclusion about Beverly’s fate based on their individual preferences.
8. Will David Ever Step Up As A Father?
Mark Doesn’t Seem All That Hopeful
In the television series, Johnny Galecki’s character, David, played a significant role in “Roseanne,” but he appeared infrequently during the first two seasons of “The Conners.” Afterward, Darlene frequently mentioned handling her children’s problems without David’s assistance, suggesting that he abandoned his responsibilities towards his kids following the termination of his relationship with their mother. This gives an impression that he unjustly left his children high and dry after their separation became permanent.
Originally, the creators intended to develop a plotline for character David in season 7 of The Conners, however, due to Johnny Galecki’s unavailability, the storyline featuring David was eliminated instead. Although they promised that David would remain relevant, the final season only hinted at his absence through Mark accusing Darlene of being responsible for David leaving home while fleeing. This does not necessarily mean that David will never reconcile with his children in the future, but it’s regrettable that we didn’t get to witness their reunion.
7. What Happened To Chuck & His Wife, Anne-Marie?
Chuck’s Too Busy At The Hospital To Appear
Dan’s friend, Chuck, had limited appearances on “The Conners” to begin with, possibly because James Pickens Jr. is often occupied acting as Richard Webber in “Grey’s Anatomy.” Regrettably, Chuck’s final storyline on “The Conners” shares a tragic resemblance with Webber’s character arc on “Grey’s Anatomy,” both involving the loss of their respective spouses. In “Grey’s,” Webber loses his wife Adele following her battle with Alzheimer’s and a heart attack in season 9. Similarly, “The Conners” Season 4 sees Chuck’s wife Anne-Marie suffer a stroke.
Despite Chuck and Dan sharing significant moments together, given Dan’s personal experience with losing a spouse following a struggle, the show never explicitly reveals what transpired between Chuck and Anne-Marie after her stroke. While Chuck descended into deep depression, allowing his home to deteriorate, the lack of subsequent mentions by Dan suggests that Chuck may have been left without support during this difficult period. Fingers crossed that his absence in The Conners season 7 indicates a positive resolution for now.
6. Does Dan Still Talk To Jerry?
He Just Blipped Out Of Existence
Over several years, the Conners family only had three children: Becky, Darlene, and DJ. However, an unexpected pregnancy announcement in season 7 resulted in baby Jerry’s arrival, which became one of the most intricate storylines on Roseanne. Remarkably, Roseanne Conner remained pregnant for over a year to coincide with Roseanne Barr’s real-life pregnancy (which was disclosed slightly later). Additionally, the Conners initially announced they were having a girl, but eventually gave birth to a boy as Roseanne Barr desired Jerry’s gender to match her newborn son.
In the revamped series, it’s mentioned that Jerry vanished without a trace from his fishing boat, which he never returned to. Following Roseanne’s demise, Dan only hinted at having three children in The Conners, according to showrunner Bruce Helford. It is speculated that this may stem from a falling-out between Jerry and his father, with Dan potentially resenting Jerry for not being there when Roseanne passed away. However, it’s uncertain whether Helford intended this or if Jerry was merely omitted from the final season since there’s no direct reference to him. The nature of their relationship and any potential contact they might have is now a secret that will never be revealed.
5. Will Ben’s Magazine Actually Be Successful?
He Still Hasn’t Finished Getting It Off The Ground
In addition to the court testimony by Dan in his lawsuit against opioid producers, which they believe led to Roseanne’s demise, another major plotline in season 7 of The Conners revolves around Darlene feeling neglected as Ben becomes engrossed in launching his hardware magazine. By the end of the series finale, it remains uncertain how far he has progressed with this venture. Despite his evident efforts, he has also enlisted additional assistance that he may not be able to afford at this point.
In simpler terms, the money used to start the business came from insurance claims after Ben’s store was destroyed by fire. However, that money won’t last indefinitely, so it would have been helpful if the series provided updates on whether the magazine will indeed launch successfully in the long run. Moreover, it’s worth noting that Ben previously lost a publication due to his lack of understanding about business dealings with corporate owners, which could potentially recur when seeking sponsors for his new magazine. Since Ben was mostly absent from the show this season, we haven’t had the chance to see if he has learned and grown enough as an editor to handle things better this time around.
4. Will Darlene & Chad Continue To Be Friends?
Things Are At Least Going To Be Awkward Now
In the last season of The Conners, Chad’s entrance sparked some concern due to Ben and Darlene’s past problems with Darlene’s romantic entanglements with other men. Initially, it appeared that Chad’s character might follow a similar path. Despite the apparent non-romantic nature of their interactions, Becky sensibly questions Darlene upon discovering she had been hiding her friendship with Chad. However, in the season finale, Darlene swiftly refuses Chad when he proposes a date.
It’s likely that Darlene may cross paths with Chad once more, given her frequent visits to the Lobo and Ben’s continued work on the magazine, leading to late nights at home for Darlene. Whether this means a resumption of their relationship or just friendship remains uncertain.
3. Are Becky & Tyler In It For The Long Haul?
Joining Finances Led To A Rare Fight Between Them
It’s hard to argue against the fact that Tyler represents Becky’s most stable relationship within the series. At one point, it seemed possible that she could end up with Emilio, and they even dabbled in a casual “friends with benefits” arrangement. However, every past romantic entanglement Becky has had on The Conners has been marked by significant warning signs of one kind or another – be it a lack of romance, immigration issues, or the complications that come with dating a college professor. Tyler, on the other hand, is simply a kind, polite pilot who adores Becky and knows how to prepare delicious meals.
Regrettably, the TV show The Conners hasn’t delved deeply into their capacity to surmount disagreements often. An early dispute between them arose when Becky resented Tyler for hiring Beverly Rose to win his favor. The series finale fight, however, arises from their inability to agree on financial management. Over the course of the show, they haven’t experienced enough highs and lows to determine whether their relationship is strong enough to last through thick and thin.
2. Will The Conners Ever See DJ Again?
They Don’t Even Mention Him Anymore
It wasn’t Michael Fishman who decided to write DJ off from The Conners; instead, it was the producers’ decision due to DJ being called overseas with Geena after she re-enlisted. Although fans of Roseanne felt his absence deeply, the truth is that DJ didn’t often play significant roles in many major storylines beyond those involving Geena or Mary on The Conners.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but feel that DJ had an untapped narrative richness, given his military background and PTSD struggles. His absence from the mall shooting episode in season 4 was a significant loss, as it presented a golden opportunity to weave those elements into the storyline more deeply. Most painfully, The Conners season 7 chose to overlook DJ’s existence entirely. Just like Beverly and David, it would have brought a sense of closure and joy to learn about DJ’s fate in the show’s closing chapters. Similar to Beverly and David, fans are left to envision DJ’s ending ourselves.
1. Can Harris Keep The Lanford Lunch Box Successful?
She Had To Fire Her Only Help Besides Louise
In a more conversational tone: DJ, with his military background and PTSD struggle, could have offered an engaging story arc. Unfortunately, his exclusion from season 4’s mall shooting episode meant losing a prime chance to weave that into the narrative. It’s disappointing that after DJ left, The Conners season 7 never referenced him again. Just like Beverly and David, it would have been heartening to hear some uplifting updates about his character as the series concluded. As it stands, fans will need to use their imagination to imagine DJ’s story’s resolution.
After Jackie and Becky departed, it seems that Louise is the only one contributing efforts outside of the kitchen. In season 7 of The Conners, Harris took on Riley as a new hire, but unfortunately for her, the arrangement resulted in a new boyfriend and an overwhelming loss of business that forced her to dismiss Riley without having the chance to find a replacement on-screen first. To make matters worse, Harris speaks very little at Roseanne’s grave in the series finale, leaving us uncertain about the restaurant’s performance. However, she does assure us that the food is delicious.
