In the seventh episode of Severance Season 2, we might encounter a particularly crucial (and heartfelt) installment thus far, delving deep into the mystery surrounding Gemma’s role at Lumon and examining the intricacies of her bond with Mark.
The most memorable instance in Severance thus far hasn’t been surpassed: When Mark’s Inner self exclaimed, “She’s alive!”, upon discovering that the deceased spouse of his Outer self, believed to be Ms. Casey, was actually still living.
Among all the intriguing elements (like the Export Hall, the Glasgow Block, even that peculiar goat incident), the enigma surrounding Gemma’s fate and her miraculous survival is undoubtedly the most compelling mystery that has me hooked on this series.
Gear up, folks! Here I am, excitedly sharing that Season 2 Episode 7 is nothing short of extraordinary, intense, and eye-opening – it dives deep into the mysteries surrounding Cold Harbor and Gemma. The twists and turns in Severance are going to leave our world forever changed.
Mark meets Gemma
In the past, we find ourselves at Ganz College. Gemma sits beside Mark, preparing to donate blood. Mark inquires about what she’s reading, and Gemma responds, “I’m delving into ‘Themes of Religious Conversion in Tolstoy’s The Death of Ivan Ilyich.’ It’s a crucial piece that tackles profound themes such as mortality, life’s purpose, and spiritual transformation – all topics central to Severance.”
(This version maintains the original meaning while providing a more conversational tone and clarifying the significance of the text for readers unfamiliar with it.)
He chuckles and cautions with a playful ‘spoiler warning,’ before unveiling his book ‘All Quiet on the Potent Front: Substance Abuse Among Soldiers in World War One.'”
Or more casually,
“He smirks and warns about spoilers, then shares the title of what he’s reading: ‘All Quiet on the Drug-Fueled Front: Soldier Substance Use in World War One.’
The interaction is full of lighthearted banter and hints of romantic interest; she declares that the author must be an exceptional intellect, to which he concurs. They exchange introductions, marking the commencement of what promises to be a complex interplay of beauty and pain in their relationship.
In the here and now, a Lumon nurse is drawing blood from Gemma. She queries, “Where have you been?” referring to her state of confusion, as she navigates between recollections of Mark and her disquieting present circumstances.

Cold Harbor is the most important clue to Severance’s biggest mystery
Devon finds out about Mark’s reintegration and Gemma
In the aftermath of Episode 6, Mark lies unconscious. Reghabi is hopeful he’ll recover without lasting harm, yet brushes aside Devon’s concerns. Reghabi shares that Mark has been recuperating, but this news doesn’t sit well with Devon; she warns her that if she approaches Mark, she’ll be tossed off a bridge.
She asks, “That’s his wish?” To which Devon responds, “He wishes to learn if Gemma is still alive.” Then, in a shocking revelation, Reghabi confirms, “Yes, she is… alive.
Severance reveals what the MDR file names mean
At Lumon, I undergo an extensive health assessment – weigh-in, eye test, blood pressure check, and balance evaluation. The nurse queries if I’ve had my meal, finished reading, and done my physical exercises before posing an unusual question: “If you were trapped in a landslide, would your fear be more about suffocating or drowning?
“Drowning,” Gemma says, causing the levels on her “woemeter” to briefly spike.
“How many rooms today?” she asks, and the doctor tells her: “Six.”
Gemma strides into her spacious dwelling and scrutinizes her wardrobe options for the day, settling on a red gown paired with a short bob hairstyle imitation. Catching sight of this ensemble, she exclaims, “Oh dear!” It remains mysterious as to why she’s taken aback at first.
She strolls down the hallway, glancing at file names such as Allentown, Cairns, Dranesville, Siena, Loveland, and Tumwater – these being the titles that the MDR team has been handling since the first season of Severance.
Gemma has dozens of Innies
Upon reaching her initial room, she finds herself in Wellington. The nurse requires her to place her hand on a scanning device, which then draws a small amount of blood from her finger for access.
Upon entering, she changes to an Innie that’s connected to this particular space (and its associated files). While she appears to be Gemma in the hallway and living area, stepping into any designated room or the partitioned level triggers a switch to one of the numerous Innies residing within her mind. Wow!
Beyond making matters worse, it turns out that Wellington is actually a dental clinic, which means poor Innie spends her life at the dentist’s office. Furthermore, the enigma from Episode 5 gets resolved: the man humming the ‘Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald’ reappears, and his identity is revealed as Dr. Mauer.
She requests a brief respite, but he reminds her that it’s already been six weeks. However, she insists that she hasn’t actually been away for long.
With apprehension, she settles into a seat as he commences his test. After two hours, she exits the room, unable to recall anything beyond her lips feeling somewhat tender.
She strides by Cold Harbor, however, she doesn’t venture within. The mystery of its contents lingers – yet it appears to be the most significant chamber among them all (as Mr Drummond put it, this moment would rank as one of the most momentous in the history of our planet).
Mark remembers his life with Gemma
While struggling to rouse a sleeping Mark, Devon finds himself reminiscing about the early stages of his romance with Gemma.
As she prepares to depart for a lecture, he unexpectedly visits her office. At this stage in their relationship, they’ve gone on a couple of dates. Remarkably, he recalls her mentioning her fascination with ants, so he procures an ant farm as a thoughtful gift for her.
It transpires that he misunderstood her. She prefers plants over ants. After exchanging a kiss, the scene skips ahead to later in their relationship, where Gemma discovers a flat-pack crib box. “It was on discount,” Mark says with a grin, and they joke about his lack of skill when it comes to assembling things like this.
Afterward, we transition into a series showing their contented life as one melody unfolds – Jacques Brel’s ‘La Valse à mille temps’. This continues until they attend a dinner party with Devon and Ricken, at which point Gemma subtly informs Devon that she is expecting.
Unfortunately, fate took an unexpected turn for the worse. Weeks, or even months, passed, and I (Gemma) faced the heartbreaking reality of a miscarriage. One day, Mark found me in a state of distress in the shower, and it was then that the gravity of the situation became clear to him as well.
Gemma’s miscarriage paved the way for Lumon to find her
As we move closer to the current moment, Ms. Casey engages in conversation with Mark prior to the shot passing through the cables located beneath the MDR team’s computers. This journey eventually leads us to an observation room situated deep underground within Lumon. Here, a compact group of individuals (who bear an uncanny resemblance to Mark and his crew) observe Ms. Casey and Mark via their monitors, scrutinizing every move they make.
Mr. Drummond inquires, “Are the barriers functioning as intended?” To which the man in Wellington, now dressed casually and sporting a mustache, replies, “Yes, everything is running smoothly… she’s quite endearing. I must say, she seems to like me just as much.
Mr. Drummond questions, ‘Wasn’t she attempting to bend your fingers?’ However, instead of responding, we observe Gemma strolling along the hallway in a light-blue jumpsuit before she disappears into a room.
Meanwhile, the setting changes to the past, with Gemma and Mark entering the Butzemann Fertility Center. Noticeably, the same individual from Lumon passes by Mark, casting a suspicious eye towards Gemma.
In this scenario, Mark suggests that for many individuals, this is a significant step. He expresses his affection for her. However, she feels compelled to apologize, even though it’s unnecessary. She then begins to complete a new patient intake form, and in the upper left corner, you can spot the Lumon logo.
Cold Harbor is Gemma’s final room
In this part, things become somewhat unusual. While they’re in the clinic, the setting shifts to Gemma being at Lumon, and then the camera moves swiftly through the seemingly infinite, blinking halls of Lumon, interspersed with glimpses of the past (and an odd scene of someone crafting a small statue from clay).
In the end, they arrive at another recollection featuring Gemma and Mark; this time, it’s Mark giving her a fertility shot. She confides in him that she’s anxious, and although he appears somewhat preoccupied, he responds, “A child is already out there waiting for us, we just need to stretch out our hands and take hold of her.
At Lumon, Dr. Mauer inquires from Gemma about her day’s activities; more precisely, he asks about the number of rooms she entered and whether she recalls any incidents that took place within those rooms. His aim is to understand her emotional state upon leaving the rooms, particularly if she experienced any “melancholy” or “passion.
In my own words, I express that I’ve yet to explore a single chamber within Cold Harbor: “When have I ventured through every room?” I query. To this, he replies with a sense of mystery, “Once you’ve seen them all, you’ll rediscover the world, and the world will recognize you anew.
She inquires, “Will I meet Mark then?” He replies, “Mark stands to gain much from the child you’re bearing. Just as Kier alleviated your suffering, Kier will ease his burdens.
She asks him to speak casually, and he replies with a goodnight. He then wishes her a sweet dream.
Reghabi leaves
The following day, Mark remains unresponsive, yet Reghabi comments that he’s “steady… he’s on a journey now,” implying he’ll regain consciousness when the time is right. Devon inquires about the feasibility of the reintegration process, to which Reghabi replies they have no other viable option available.
Devon shares information on the Damona Birthing Retreat with Reghabi, explaining that individuals undergo a transformation there to embrace their inner selves. However, Reghabi is skeptical about this concept.
Devon suggests reaching out to Harmony Cobel since she may have information about accessing the cabin. Regarding Reghabi, he considers her as someone deeply connected to Lumon, having grown up with them and serving as one of their soldiers.
Given the circumstances, Reghabi decides it’s wiser to move on, gathering her belongings and departing. She emphasizes firmly, “Don’t even think about calling her,” and as she exits, Mark begins to murmur vaguely in his slumber.
The Ideographic Cards return
The scene shifts to a flashback once more, and this time, Gemma is examining the identical ideographic cards from Season 1. “Chikhai Bardo,” Mark announces, displaying a card depicting what appears to be one man engaged in combat with another colleague.
“It’s the same guy fighting himself and defeating his own psyche. Ego death,” Gemma explains.
Pausing the episode at this particular scene reveals that the survey cards arrived via post, and participants stand a chance to win money if they complete it. It’s unlikely these cards are just a coincidence; instead, it seems like an initial move by Lumon to intertwine themselves in their lives (given she gained access to the mailing list through the fertility clinic).
Relations between Mark and Gemma are strained. He thinks the survey is a waste of time, while she believes he’s being unreasonable. She urges him to cease dictating her emotions, and he claims ignorance regarding her feelings. Additionally, he suggests they halt (referring to Gemma’s fertility treatment).
Gemma celebrates Christmas… forever
At the Lumon facility, Gemma commences another day confined, making her way into yet another chamber designed to replicate intense aircraft turbulence (with a meal that’s less than appetizing provided).
While she carries on with her daily routine, Mr. Drummond informs Dr. Mauer that Mark’s Cold Harbor has been stagnant at 96% ever since his nosebleed. “Afterward,” he cautions him, “you’ll need to bid her farewell… for Kier.
In this alternate Christmas-themed setting, Gemma prepares herself for another room, where it’s always Christmas time. As the soft strains of “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” fill the air, her Inner Self pens a heartfelt letter to “Mr Tisdale”, acknowledging the thoughtful present he bestowed upon her and her spouse. Importantly, this isn’t about Mark; in this mini-universe, she’s married to Dr Mauer instead.
Although there’s something odd about it, she composes the letter using her left hand, which seems difficult for her (and hard to read as well).
He states, “This is the final one.” She inquires, “For how long must I continue with this?” He answers, “You’ve completed it, but every year somehow brings Christmas back again.” She responds, “It feels like it’s always Christmas.
Just before leaving, he confesses his love for Gemma (or whomever this Innie might be). She chuckles initially but reciprocates when he prompts her. As she heads back to her room, the melody of Billie Holiday’s ‘I’ll Be Seeing You’ stirs a recollection of Mark angrily taking apart their unborn child’s crib.
Gemma tries to escape
The following day, at 7:30 a.m., Dr. Mauer shows up at her door. Gemma complains that her hand is still hurting since leaving the room in Allentown. “I want to go home,” she states.
He said that your husband got remarried last year, and now he has a daughter,” he casually mentions, though it’s all untrue. “It seems like you’ve been away for quite some time, Gemma. It appears he’s found someone new… perhaps you have too. I wonder if one of those rooms might be yours?
He wonders if she has a preference for one door over the others, perhaps feeling emotions there she’s never experienced with Mark before, which he seems to notice.
Upon grabbing The Death of Ivan Ilyich from her bookshelf, she unexpectedly strikes him with a chair, leaving him unconscious. She then takes his keycard, slips out of their shared space silently, and manages to reach the elevator.
Yet, upon stepping onto the divided level, she transforms into Ms. Casey. To compound matters, she’s met by Mr. Milchick who instructs her to reenter the elevator. Despite her intuition telling her something is amiss, she finds herself powerless to act.
The night Mark lost Gemma
In another flashback, Gemma leaves for a party, while Mark stays home. Later that fateful evening, the police arrive at his door with devastating news – his wife had been involved in a car accident and perished. Yet, there’s uncertainty surrounding Gemma’s whereabouts; did she get into an accident and Lumon found her body, or did she go directly to Lumon that night?
The shot transitions from here to Gemma, tearfully uttering “Mark,” in the elevator, as a nurse assists her and guides her back to her room.
The episode concludes with a hint of optimism: Eventually, Mark regains consciousness. “Where were you?” queries Devon, but all that comes to his mind is Gemma.
