‘UnPrisoned’ Canceled After Two Seasons at Hulu

As a long-time admirer of Kerry Washington’s exceptional acting skills and her dedication to bringing diverse stories to the screen, I find myself profoundly saddened by the cancellation of “UnPrisoned.” This series, with its compelling narrative and powerhouse cast, has been a shining beacon of quality storytelling that resonated deeply with audiences.

“UnPrisoned” has been canceled after two seasons.

The series was broadcast under the Onyx Collective banner on the streaming platform, Hulu. Lead actress Kerry Washington shared this news on her verified Instagram profile.

“Ladies & Gents, that is a wrap on Unprisoned,” Washington wrote in part. “This beautiful show that we poured so much of our hearts and souls into is unfortunately not coming back for a Season 3. But I wanted you to hear it from me because while we’re super duper disappointed, we’re also crazy deeply grateful.”

She went on to say, “Many thanks to ABCS, Hulu, and Onyx for providing us a space to express our creativity. But what truly matters is you – our audience. Thank you for joining us, sharing our emotions, from laughing and crying to yelling and dancing, and even rolling your eyes sometimes. You’ve been there with us every episode, cheering us on.

Her full statement can be read below.

Titled “UnPrisoned”, the show featured Denzel Washington, Delroy Lindo, Faly Rakotohavana, Marque Richardson, Jordyn McIntosh, and Jee Young Han. The story revolves around Paige Alexander (played by Washington), a marriage and family therapist whose routine is thrown off balance when her father (portrayed by Lindo) emerges from prison and decides to reside with her and her son.

The series first aired back in 2023, and its second installment was released in July 2024. Critics have praised it extensively, giving both seasons an average approval rating of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes.

As a movie enthusiast, I had the pleasure of watching a captivating series that was masterfully crafted under the visionary leadership of Tracy McMillan, who served as both creator and executive producer. Yvette Lee Bowser joined forces with Washington and Pilar Savone in their role as executive producers, working through Washington’s Simpson Street banner, alongside Lindo. The dynamic duo of Joy Gorman Wettels and Jen Braeden also took on the mantle of executive producers. ABC Signature was proud to serve as the studio behind this remarkable production.
