Recently, Electronic Arts declared that they’re shutting down servers for four games, including Need for Speed Rivals. On a brighter note, offline play will still be available for this game. However, it seems we might bid farewell to the entire Need for Speed series for an extended period, as the publisher appears to have indefinitely paused its development.
Need for Speed fades into the shadows
Matthew Everingham, a well-known photojournalist and frequent collaborator with Speedhunters, shared on his Instagram that the website supported by EA (Electronic Arts) has been temporarily shut down. This decision was likely made due to their focus being shifted away from the Need for Speed series.
Speedhunters were abandoned. Electronic Arts (EA) has put a hold on Need For Speed, implying that no more financial support will be provided for its maintenance.
Speedhunters functions as a blog, albeit not strictly tied to NFS, that fosters automotive culture. Its latest update was posted on April 8th of this year, and since then, it has been indefinitely on hold, with the same status applying to its social media platforms and merchandise store.
As a dedicated gamer, I haven’t received any official word yet about the future of my favorite game series, but from what I’ve gathered internally, things seem uncertain. If by some miracle, the series makes a comeback, it looks like we might have to wait until after the grand launch of the next Battlefield installment.

In September 2023, EA disclosed that a segment of the Criterion team (creators of the NFS series) were reassigned to work on Battlefield 6. Simultaneously, it was revealed in February that this transfer affected every employee at the studio. However, players have been assured that a new NFS game is forthcoming, providing optimism that the commitment will be honored.
2022 saw the launch of the latest edition in the Need for Speed series, titled Unbound. This release received generally favorable feedback from critics, but among players, opinions were more divided. On Steam, there are over 40,000 reviews, with just 61% expressing positive sentiments. Many players stopped playing after only three months and reverted to previous installments in the series.
