The enigma that seemed about to be resolved just before the Season 3 finale took an unexpected turn has left us puzzled. Now, Casey’s true identity presents a challenge for The Way Home in its fourth season. However, we have our speculations.
In The Way Home’s second season, Casey Goodwin arrived in Port Haven pretending to be an intern at Kat’s newspaper. They alleged that they were a grandchild of Evelyn, visiting the town to collect some of her things following her passing.
Yet, Casey’s alibi soon fell apart. The discovery that Casey possessed a ring identical to Kat’s engagement ring raised suspicions, ultimately revealing that Casey was also a time traveler. Now it’s clear that Casey is both a Landry and a Goodwin, but she undeniably isn’t Alice’s offspring.
In the final episode of Season 3, the showrunners chose not to disclose Casey’s true identity completely, leaving room for future developments (which I wasn’t entirely thrilled about). This means that there’s a lot at stake in Season 4. If you’re wondering where to begin, here are five theories that might help shed some light on the mystery.
Casey could still be Alice & Max Goodwin’s grandchild in The Way Home Season 4
In the recent episodes of The Way Home Season 3, it becomes apparent that Alice and Max are developing a romantic relationship, as they share a kiss towards the end of Episode 9. Despite Casey revealing that he is not Alice’s biological child, it doesn’t necessarily rule out the possibility of a familial bond between them in a more indirect way, such as a grandchild-like connection.
It’s important to note that Casey is sometimes known by the nickname “K.C.”, which appears at various historical junctures, such as when they signed their name during Season 3 Episode 8.
In the Season 2 Episode 4, when Casey initially encountered Alice, there was a strong sense of intrigue on Casey’s part. Given that Casey is a time traveler and already possesses more knowledge than Alice has ever acquired, this curiosity might have seemed unnecessary… unless Casey was attempting to forge links with their ancestors.
This theory could also clarify why Casey descends from both the Landry and Goodwin lines. In this lineage, Kat would be their great-grandmother, while Evelyn would be their great-great-grandmother, as further details will discuss below.
The original connection to Evelyn
It’s common knowledge that Casey enters Port Haven disguised as Evelyn’s grandchild, and there might be some truth to this persona. Upon her arrival, Casey expresses that she isn’t particularly close with Kat, stating that delving into their grandmother’s records at the newspaper office stirred up unpleasant discoveries about the early Goodwins, which caused distress.
Simultaneously, it’s not as if Casey professes extensive knowledge about them, but they are acquainted enough to attend the Founder’s Day event in Season 2 Episode 5, and also know that Evelyn’s house serves as a suitable hideout during that same summer.
Even though it’s quite clear in appearance, it still has some issues to address. As previously mentioned, it’s possible that Evelyn considers more than just her grandmother among the great ones.
Kat and Elliot’s child or grandchild
Even though Alice is a teenager, it’s not impossible that Elliot and Kat could also be in the picture. Since they’ve officially become a couple and don’t currently have children, there’s still a chance they might choose to expand their family in the future. After all, they’re young enough to consider having more kids.
Throughout Season 2, it’s evident that Kat and Casey share a deep connection, one that I find myself drawn into. Yet, Elliot seems less intriguing to me (though I suspect there might be reasons for this). Nonetheless, if we take Elliot at his word, the time travel thing appears to unite Kat and Casey rather than Elliot himself.
As a fan, I’m sensing there could be unspoken family secrets that tie Kat more deeply into the storyline. If it turns out she’s Casey’s grandmother, it might help explain the strong connection between them, though this would imply additional complexities since Kat would have had another child at some point in her life.
Elliot’s Mom & Jacob’s grandchild or descendant
Towards the close of Season 3, it was revealed that Elliot’s mother had entered the pond with an enigmatic male figure, whom theories suggest could be a Landry due to time travel conventions. The prevailing hypothesis is that the man is Jacob, but we lack solid evidence other than this single photograph to support this claim.
Upon their initial encounter, it appeared that Casey wasn’t particularly excited or nervous about meeting him. This indifference, combined with certain physical resemblances, initially sparked speculation among fans that Jacob might be her father.
In an interview with TV Insider, Showrunner Alexandra Clarke expressed that they found the pairing intriguing. By the end of our season, it seemed as though Casey was mostly confronting Alice and Kat. Previously, we hadn’t had these characters meet another time traveler yet. Moreover, Jacob, we understood, may have only heard about Casey through the tales others were sharing. Thus, it was exciting to bring them together for the first time.
In essence, what they discovered was primarily focused on assisting Jacob personally, which made it particularly heartwarming compared to helping him indirectly through Alice or Kat. After all, as Jacob himself acknowledges, this endeavor is crucial to his wellbeing, even terming it a form of salvation for him, and having the chance to aid him directly was indeed meaningful.
It’s uncertain how Jacob might connect with Elliot’s mother, but given the mysteries surrounding the Landry pond, anything seems plausible.
Elliot’s Mom’s & Colton’s brother’s grandchild or descendant
It’s important to note that we’ve never encountered Colton’s supposed brother, as he is said to have vanished back in 1965. To our knowledge, Colton didn’t use the pond as a starting point in his search for him, and since then, the trail seems to have gone cold.
An intriguing fan theory suggests that Colton’s brother might be his twin, implying we’ve encountered him at various points in history across past episodes. On Facebook, one person shared: “Allow me to restate a comment I made earlier, but here it goes again with my take on Colton… I don’t believe this is the same individual.
I’m beginning to wonder if Colton’s sibling might be a twin or bears a strong resemblance, assisting Colton in searching for Jacob. It’s possible this could be part of a plan to return Colton, as it was his brother who perished in the truck accident.
If that’s how things unfolded, it’s possible that Colton’s twin might have encountered Elliot’s mother at some juncture, especially if they both possessed the ability to travel through time. The strong resemblance between adult Jacob and teen Colton also adds weight to this theory, which could account for the mysterious pond photo you see above.
2026 is when Hallmark will air Season 4 of “The Way Home.” Delve into the theories that have been debunked, understand why Colton’s resurrection isn’t possible, and explore the top-rated Hallmark movies and television series in their entirety.
