Unlock Destiny 2’s Gryphon in One Week: The Ultimate Guide to Heavy Metal

In Destiny 2, the Gryphon marks the debut of the game’s first collectible, weaponized vehicle. However, Guardians need to act quickly as they only have a limited time to secure this powerful Sparrow.

Starting from May 9, 2025, a fresh and time-limited Player vs Player (PvP) mode called Heavy Metal has been made available. This temporary mode resembles Rite of the Nine in concept, but its playtime is significantly more restricted.

Although Bungie hasn’t confirmed if this event will come back again, the Heavy Metal event is scheduled for just one run that lasts only a week. Consequently, you have until May 16, 2025, to obtain its ultimate prize – the Gryphon – as it might be the only chance to do so.

How to get The Gryphon fast

To acquire the Gryphon, you’ll reach the ultimate reward at Rank 15 in Heavy Metal’s Progression System. You can advance by gathering Experience Points (XP) from participating in Heavy Metal games and finishing Challenges.

During match play, Event XP you gain from victories accumulates over time, but most of your advancement is derived from finishing Daily and Weekly Challenges. These challenges provide substantial amounts of Event XP and should be given priority.

Daily and Weekly Heavy Metal missions provide substantial Event XP.

To hasten your advancement, you can utilize the Chips you’ve earned from the Event Track and use them to re-roll any Daily Challenge. This is especially beneficial for challenges that involve an element of randomness, like flying a randomly chosen vehicle in several battles.

As a dedicated enthusiast, accomplishing each daily and weekly challenge puts me on track to earn sufficient Event XP for reaching Rank 15. Any extra games I play beyond the challenges serve to further accelerate my progress towards that rank.

How good is The Gryphon?

In terms of Destiny 2’s existing gameplay strategies (the “meta”), the Gryphon won’t cause significant changes or stir things up very much.

In most final stages of games, vehicles are generally prohibited. However, this robust speed vehicle boasts some intriguing features that might prove beneficial in specific scenarios.

The Gryphon’s weapons change properties depending on your Guardian’s equipped Super.

Similar to exotic weapons like Hard Light and Dead Messenger, the Gryphon’s weaponry adapts elements. In particular, the type of ammunition it fires corresponds to the element of your active Super, altering its secondary attack. Here are the effects for each:

1. Arc (Stormcaller’s Bolt of Stormcaller or Dawnblade’s Daybreak) – Gryphon’s attacks create electrical arcs that chain between enemies.
2. Solar (Sunbreaker’s Hammer of Sol or Titan’s Sentinel Shield) – Gryphon’s attacks ignite enemies, dealing damage over time and causing them to explode when defeated.
3. Void (Nightstalker’s Cloak of the Wolf or Warlock’s Nova Bomb) – Gryphon’s attacks drain the energy from enemies, slowing them down and damaging other nearby foes.

  • Void – Inflict Volatile
  • Arc – Blinds enemies
  • Solar – Applies Scorch
  • Stasis – Freezes enemies
  • Strand – Suspends enemies

During testing, it was observed that the Gryphon’s base damage was relatively low, particularly when facing opponents of Major level or higher. Although the Super synergy offers an intriguing and unique aspect, its power isn’t substantial enough to make up for the disadvantage of being mounted on a vehicle, which restricts access to all weapons and abilities.

It’s likely that the Gryphon’s limited power is intentional for testing vehicle combat effectiveness in low-risk situations, provided by Bungie. The Gryphon isn’t essential but offers an entertaining alternative to Sparrows and Skimmers, capable of swiftly eliminating weaker enemies during Patrol missions.
