In simpler terms, Alex Scharfman creates and oversees “Death of a Unicorn“, a wildly entertaining blend of horror and comedy. This film is yet another satire criticizing the wealthy elite, as suggested by its title. Although the movie’s pacing may stumble in some areas, it eventually finds a groove amidst the numerous jokes and violence, effectively skewering the ultra-rich.
The film commences by showcasing Elliot Kintner (Paul Rudd) and his daughter Ridley (Jenna Ortega) en route to a weekend getaway organized by Elliot’s boss, Odell Leopold (Richard E. Grant). As they traverse the picturesque mountains draped in forests (captured beautifully in Hungary), we glean some insights into their lives. Initially, it appears they share few similarities – Ridley is an ardent young progressive, while Elliot is a corporate lackey. Additionally, their bond has been frayed due to the recent passing of his wife and her mother.

For Elliot, this weekend presents an opportunity for him to rekindle his relationship with his daughter. However, his primary focus is on making a favorable impression on Odell, who’s battling cancer and has the power to promote Elliot to a top position in his pharmaceutical company. This dilemma between Elliot’s relentless pursuit of ambition for a new role and his duties towards his emotionally strained daughter serves as a recurring theme throughout the movie.
However, everything takes an unexpected turn when their vehicle crashes into what seems to be a unicorn, causing a shocking disruption. As Elliot struggles to regain his composure, Ridley examines the creature, experiencing a moment of detachment from reality. In a surreal twist, they decide to transport the dead unicorn in their SUV and continue towards Leopold’s extravagant estate, where they try to act as if nothing out of the ordinary has transpired.
As a film enthusiast, I must admit, it’s quite a conundrum: hiding a mythical creature like a unicorn in the trunk isn’t an everyday task, let alone keeping it a secret! However, somehow, the Leopolds manage to uncover the truth about our magical friend, just as astounded as Elliot and I. Yet, when they discover the unicorn’s miraculous healing abilities, Odell’s eyes light up with potential profits. Consequently, he orders his in-house scientists to replicate these enchanting qualities. Despite Ridley’s objections, she finds herself alone, even her father, still chasing his promotion, offers no support.
However, most people don’t realize that the parents of the unicorn are searching for their lost foal. When the unique creatures finally locate their deceased baby, “Death of a Unicorn” transforms into a gruesomely violent revenge film. remarkably, it becomes funnier as each excessive gore scene unfolds. Granted, it becomes quite absurd. Yet Scharfman is purposeful in his direction, and the movie’s self-awareness is a crucial factor in its success.

One reason for its success is the dedicated cast’s performances. Rudd and Ortega convincingly portray a believable father-daughter dynamic, which is crucial to their relationship. On the other hand, it’s the Leopolds who bring the humor. Grant excels in his roles, and this film is no exception. However, Téa Leoni steals the show as Odell’s exaggeratedly phony wife Belinda, while Will Poulter delivers a series of hilarious lines as their selfish and spoiled son Shepard. Their characters’ insensitivity and entitlement are humorously exposed through their performances.
Regardless of its title, “Death of a Unicorn,” this film is surprisingly enjoyable due to Scharfman’s skillful hook. He masterfully balances tone and injects humor throughout, ensuring our amusement remains consistent. However, I wished there was more depth in the central relationship between the daughters. The movie’s message might not be deep, but with its constant stream of jokes and shocking displays of gory vengeance, it’s challenging to find much to criticize.
