Universes Beyond - Final Fantasy Magic: The Gathering set is releasing in June

As a veteran of both Final Fantasy and Magic: The Gathering, I’ve traversed countless worlds, summoned countless spells, and slain countless beasts. The announcement that the Universes Beyond set will finally be released on June 13, 2025, has sent a wave of excitement coursing through my veins.

Initially unveiled during GenCon last year, the long-awaited collaboration between Final Fantasy and Magic: The Gathering, titled Universes Beyond, now has an official release date: June 13, 2025! Excited fans of Final Fantasy have been eagerly waiting for news about the upcoming Universes Beyond set. Now we have more details on what players can expect when summer rolls around next year.

During this year’s MagicCon: Vegas, the Wizards unveiled a sneak peek video featuring their team working on the upcoming Universes Beyond launch. This video provided us with hints such as the release date and sample card artwork.

There is still a lot of mystery surrounding the contents of the Final Fantasy Universes Beyond set, including unique mechanics, what the contents of the set will be (just decks, booster boxes, etc), and so much more. As a longtime fan of both Final Fantasy and Magic, I hope that we see Class-type enchantments make an appearance for some classic Final Fantasy staples like Blue Mage or Pictomancer or equipment like the Ultima Weapon or Squall’s gunblade.

We’ve still got some distance to cover until Cloud can join forces with Gandalf and Wolverine in our Magic: The Gathering deck, but time flies, and June is just around the corner. Until then, if you’re new to Magic and want to get a head start before the set release, I strongly advise exploring Wizards of the Coast’s freshly minted Foundations set and Beginner Box products. These resources are fantastic – particularly the Beginner Box – and have been long overdue for our beloved game. They’ll be instrumental in helping newcomers grasp the intricacies of the game, available from November 15 onwards.
