In terms of fan culture and theme parks, it’s long been recognized that Disney’s parks embody a significant fandom in their own right, while they excel at breathing life into existing fan communities. Recently, Disney has made significant strides with innovative attractions and worlds materialized from Pandora in Avatar to an entire new planet within the Star Wars universe. However, Universal Studios has been equally industrious in creating a unique theme park experience: the appropriately titled Epic Universe, which officially opened to the public on May 22nd.
Epic Universe has demonstrated itself to be not just an exceptional and inventive theme park, but one that effectively addresses the desires of fans while delivering immersive attractions that place them within the storyline. Consequently, it has successfully brought to life four distinct worlds spanning various mediums like books, movies, TV shows, and video games, offering visitors an interactive multiverse filled with peril, thrill, and most importantly, enjoyment.
Celestial Park Creates New Lore for Theme Park Fans
Prior to stepping through any of the park’s entrance portals, visitors must first pass by the Chronos, an imposing structure that signifies the park’s beginning. This gateway leads into a novel realm called Celestial Park. Inside, guests can interact with the celestial beings residing there, savor local cuisines, experience thrilling rides, and even lodge at the Helios Grand Hotel, which offers panoramic views of the park and is conveniently located just a one-minute stroll from the entrance. The intriguing mythos of this world sets it apart from anything Universal Orlando has previously created, making Celestial Park the central hub where all four portals are situated. This distinctive yet rejuvenating experience is unique as it isn’t tied to any specific existing intellectual property.

The attractions here offer unique experiences: the Constellation Carousel offers a fresh twist on classic carousels by allowing guests to circle around zodiac-themed creatures. Although it’s enjoyable, it can be rather predictable, but truly shines at night. On the other hand, Stardust Racers is an enormous dual coaster that propels riders through the air like speeding comets. Despite being quite thrilling, it’s also incredibly satisfying and has a hidden Easter egg on the back of its trains.
Super Nintendo World Is a Living Video Game
It’s astonishing that it took so long for the vibrant universe of Nintendo to make its way from video games to theme parks, but here we are, and Universal Studios has done an exceptional job of bringing it to life! Although this is technically the third time they’ve dipped their toes in, the excitement never wanes. As soon as visitors step through the iconic green pipe into Princess Peach’s castle and further into the expansive Mushroom Kingdom, the atmosphere transforms into a lively celebration that sets it apart from anything else in the park. It encapsulates the essence of Mario flawlessly.
As guests move on to Donkey Kong Country, the energy remains consistent, even as the scenery shifts to a more jungle-like environment. This transition showcases the incredible diversity within the Nintendo world.

In this exciting universe, you can have a blast without the Power-Up band, but having one enhances the experience significantly. This device records each guest’s stats as they participate, compete, and advance through the leaderboards, making it an exceptional choice. When it comes to attractions, Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge truly shines. It’s not just a ride; it’s an interactive gaming experience that is entertaining, engaging, and surprisingly competitive. Yoshi’s Adventure, however, offers a laid-back scavenger hunt with minimal thrills but exceptional immersion and adorableness. Lastly, Mine-Cart Madness might be the park’s most surprising coaster; although it can be jarring, even by mine cart standards, it’s an essential ride for any visitor.
How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk Is the Biggest World in the Park
The enthusiasts of the “How to Train Your Dragon” series have consistently shown their strength, even after the last movie was released in 2019. This dedicated fanbase has been so substantial that it led to not just a television spin-off, but also a theme park world called “How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk”. This expansive world invites guests to delve into what might be the park’s biggest realm and uncover its many secrets. As John Powell’s music swells in the background, visitors can engage in various activities such as meeting characters like Ruffnut and Tuffnut, stroking Toothless himself, and intermingling with Hiccup. Essentially, it offers an immersive replica of the isle that captures the same fun and vibrancy as the movies.

From a perspective of thrill-seeking experiences, this world is filled with numerous exciting options. One unique offering at the park is Fyre Drill, its sole water attraction, where guests hop aboard a viking ship and engage in water gun battles with targets or other boats. Depending on one’s aim, they might emerge relatively dry or drenched, but that’s what adds to the ride’s exhilaration. A similar experience is Dragon Racer’s Rally, where riders find themselves seated on a rotating arm. Mastering the technique can boost the fun factor, as skilled riders can spin their “dragons” while rotating, although it’s no simple task. The main attraction, however, is Hiccup’s Wing Gliders coaster, which takes riders on a high-speed chase through Berk on an out-of-control glider. It’s a captivating, story-based roller coaster that’s hard to resist repeating. Lastly, The Untrainable Dragon live production showcases some remarkable technical aspects and acting. For those who missed meeting Toothless in the park, this performance offers an excellent alternative way to enjoy his company.
Dark Universe is Totally Original and Totally Scary
In contrast to other realms modeled after established films and video games, Epic Universe’s unique world, Darkmoor, draws inspiration from the iconic Universal Monsters. Visitors pass through a gateway into this land teeming with vampires and monstrous creatures, with Frankenstein Manor standing as its central landmark. Unlike any other area in the park, Darkmoor’s lore subtly weaves an engaging narrative, and each store, ride, and eatery boasts a captivating backstory – making it truly exceptional. While there are numerous Easter eggs scattered throughout, such as the Burning Blade Tavern’s windmill catching fire in tribute to Boris Karloff’s classic film role.

The star attraction here is Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment, where we follow Victoria Frankenstein, a descendant of Victor, as she strives to restore her family’s reputation by capturing monsters. However, things take a turn for the worse when Dracula escapes. This ride is truly groundbreaking, boasting advanced animatronics that enhance the narrative and delivering genuine frights that echo the genre. It’s definitely not for the timid, but it’s an unforgettable experience.
The second attraction, Curse of the Werewolf, is a thrilling spinning coaster that places riders in the path of a menacing werewolf. The challenge is to escape without being cursed. Dark Universe has spared no expense on this miniature world within the park, making it one of the most promising attractions despite its size.
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic Is Detailed and Beautiful
In my opinion, it wouldn’t be a Universal theme park without including the magical world of Harry Potter, especially the Ministry of Magic. It’s an intricate and sometimes perplexing creation. With a special guide, visitors are whisked away to 1920s Paris amidst the chaos of the Quidditch World Cup. Here, they can savor the flavors and goods of the era while being awestruck by the grand structures that envelop them. However, the most puzzling aspect lies within the ride itself, as a journey through the Metrofloo leads to the Ministry of Magic six months after the events in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”. Sadly, there’s no clear explanation for this temporal shift, but with its enchanting scenery, interactive spells, and delicious cuisine, it’s easy to get lost in the experience and forget about the intricate details.

“Harry Potter and the Fight at the Ministry is one of the most engaging rides in the park, indicating its quality. It immerses visitors right into the action, but once she escapes, it becomes a struggle for survival as riders attempt to flee the Ministry and prevent Umbridge. This ride is another impressive addition that Potterheads are sure to adore. Battle excels on both technical and immersion fronts, offering a unique ride vehicle and a detailed queue that could easily pass for a movie set. In Paris, however, the performance, Le Cirque Arcanus, focuses more on special effects and talent, transporting spectators into the realm of Fantastic Beasts and presenting an array of extraordinary creatures tied to a moving story.
Universal’s Epic Universe Is Close to Perfect (But Will Get There in Time)
The one-of-a-kind Epic Universe stands apart in every aspect, particularly its strong links to cinema and gaming, catering to a vast array of fandoms. However, it manages to do so without diminishing the essence of each universe. Boasting thrilling rides, engaging shows, and distinctive culinary delights, this budding park has much to boast about. Yet, what truly deserves recognition is its ability to evoke the same emotions that initially captivated fans in their beloved fandoms. Nevertheless, it’s worth noting that each park will require ongoing improvements over time.
It seems that insufficient shade might pose a significant challenge at the new Epic Universe park in Florida. The scorching heat and occasional rain could potentially dampen an otherwise fantastic adventure. Although there are some trees present, it remains uncertain if they will provide sufficient relief from the elements over time. Furthermore, with minimal indoor attractions, wet days may result in a rather dull experience. However, there’s always room for improvement and expansion to address these concerns, and this could also benefit smaller areas such as Dark Universe.
In summary, Epic Universe revives Universal’s classic tagline “Ride the Movies” while introducing exciting new features, making it a must-visit destination.
