Universal Orlando’s CineSational Drones Are Finally Back—Why the Complete Show Is Worth the Wait

It’s disappointing when I go to a theme park and find one of my favorite rides or ones I was eagerly anticipating are temporarily closed for maintenance. I can still recall the disappointment as a child when I couldn’t ride Star Tours during my first visit to Disneyland because it was under renovation. But what might be worse is encountering an attraction that seems incomplete or lacks key elements, which can ruin the overall experience.

It’s really frustrating to take a ride when some non-essential parts aren’t working, leaving you stuck in this limbo where you get a taste, yet not the full experience. This has been happening with one of my favorite rides at Universal Studios Florida, CineSational: Symphonic Spectacular, for months due to missing drones. However, as of last night, CineSational is back to being spectacular!

Michael Aiello, Universal Senior Director, shared the last scenes from last night’s CineSensation broadcast, concluding with “We’re Back” as drones arranged the Universal Pictures emblem. Last night marked the first time drones had been incorporated into CineSensation since December. An incident at a drone event outside of Universal in Florida may have initially held them back from using drones, but it seems that operations have returned to their usual state.

Anyone who attended CineSational from late December 2024 up until this week undoubtedly felt let down. This evening spectacle, a harmonious blend of music, water displays, fireworks, projection mapping, and drones, loses its charm significantly if any of these components are absent.

At multiple amusement parks, drones are now a common feature in evening performances. Previously, Walt Disney World presented a short drone display at Downtown Disney, but this show has ceased operation, leaving Universal as the sole park featuring such a unique spectacle.

What makes CineSational stand out is how seamlessly the various components are blended together. I’m still amazed by their creative rendition of Back to the Future, where they use a projection-mapped image of the clock tower, a swarm of drones forming the shape of a bolt of lightning, and finally, setting off fireworks from the clock tower. That particular scene loses its enchantment without the drones.

It’s likely that there are significantly more people flocking to Universal Orlando Resort currently than last summer, due to the unveiling of Epic Universe. I’m thrilled that these visitors will have the chance to immerse themselves in the CineSational spectacle. Despite the numerous rides at Epic Universe, CineSational remains one of the premier attractions across the entire resort – an opinion that holds true only when you’ve had the opportunity to fully engage with it.
