Among the most recognizable aircraft in the expansive “Star Wars” universe, TIE Fighters stand out, coming in various designs. They’ve been a staple during the Dark Ages, Galactic War, and beyond, serving primarily in space battles while also offering support to Imperial and First Order ground forces. Yet, not all TIEs are identical; some models are significantly more impressive, powerful, and intimidating than others.
Crafted by Sienar Fleet Systems, the acronym TIE represents “Twin Ion Engines,” which produces the distinctive “screeching” sound heard as they zoom past. Throughout the Star Wars timeline, many TIE Fighters were mass-produced, while others remained prototypes and never left the drawing board. Despite this, here are 10 remarkable and top-tier TIE Fighter variations from the Star Wars universe.
10. TIE/ln Starfighter
The Classic Symbol of the Imperial Navy
As a passionate film enthusiast, I’d say: “Amongst all Imperial starfighters, the iconic TIE/ln model stands out as the standard version from Sienar Fleet Systems. Post the fall of the Republic and emergence of the Empire, this design became a powerful emblem representing the Imperial Navy’s strength. Interestingly, its mass production was due to its cost-efficiency, as it lacked features like hyperdrive or shields that other starfighters boasted.
Due to their affordability, the Empire had the capacity to churn out large quantities of TIE Fighters, frequently dominating opponents through numerical superiority. Notably, the iconic TIE/ln model is mentioned as it holds a special place due to its classic design and being the first one that usually comes to mind.
9. TIE/fo Space Superiority Fighter
The Upgraded First Order Model
In the era of sequels and the emergence of the First Order, the regular TIE fighter underwent an upgrade, transforming into the TIE/fo Space Superiority Fighter. Equipped with shields and hyperdrive, this advanced model could accommodate both a pilot and a secondary gunner, frequently flown by the elite forces of the First Order. This is the very same design that Finn and Poe used to flee from a First Order Star Destroyer in “The Force Awakens”.
8. Outland TIE Fighter
Used by the Imperial Remnant
After the New Republic emerged victorious over the Empire, various Imperial factions scattered to the Outer Rim and mysterious areas known as the Unknown Regions. Among these factions, Moff Gideon’s forces were seen using modified TIE Fighters, called Outland TIEs, in the Outer Rim. These fighters, though nearly indistinguishable from standard TIE/ln models, boasted an innovative design: foldable wings. This distinctive trait enabled pilots to launch and land these fighters autonomously, unlike conventional TIE Fighters that required specialized docking on Imperial Star Destroyers and larger vessels.
7. TIE Crawler
A Rare Imperial Tank
The TIE Crawler, an original design by Sienar, wasn’t technically a spacecraft; rather, it was a ground vehicle with a cockpit resembling a TIE embedded between two massive tracks on either side. Despite having twin engines, this vehicle was more commonly found in non-canon Legends materials. However, it did make a canonical appearance in the 2018 book titled “Choose Your Destiny: A Luke & Leia Adventure“. Unlike traditional starfighters, pilots controlled its speed over rugged terrain using foot pedals instead of flight sticks.
6. TIE/es Echelon Assault Shuttle
Created by Rise of Skywalker’s Original Director
In the original concept of Rise of Skywalker by Colin Trevorrow, who was later replaced by J.J. Abrams as director, the TIE/es Echelon Assault Shuttle was designed. This spacecraft wasn’t included in Abrams’ Episode IX, but it found a new role instead – it can now be seen in Galaxy’s Edge, the Star Wars-themed area at Disneyland. Although its appearance in this quasi-canonical setting may give it a unique status, it remains an official part of the Star Wars universe. In the continuity, it serves as a transport for First Order troops into battle and is known to have carried Supreme Leader Kylo Ren to Batuu to investigate Resistance activity on that planet.
5. TIE/in Interceptor
Flown by the Empire’s Best Pilots
The Interceptor model of TIE fighters was superior in speed and agility while remaining cost-effective for mass production. These high-performance aircraft were flown by the Imperial Navy’s top-tier pilots, including Inquisitors and Palpatine’s personal guard. On screen, they made their mark during the Battle of Endor and have reappeared in The Mandalorian season 3 as well. Additionally, these advanced TIE fighters boasted more firepower than their standard counterparts, featuring laser cannons mounted at each wingtip.
4. TIE/vn “Silencer”
Piloted by Kylo Ren
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but marvel at the TIE/vn Silencer, the personal starfighter of Kylo Ren as depicted in The Last Jedi. This advanced prototype, boasting an array of powerful laser cannons and missile launchers, was tailored to suit Ren’s unique style, with custom flight controls designed specifically for him. Although the TIE Silencer was eventually swapped out for the TIE Whisper in Rise of Skywalker, there’s no denying that the Silencer steals the show with its distinctive design, far surpassing the minor modifications made to a standard TIE Interceptor on the Whisper.
3. TIE Advanced x1
Darth Vader’s Signature Fighter
During the Galactic Civil War, Darth Vader piloted his own custom-designed TIE Advanced x1. This starship was influenced by various designs such as Republic V-wings, Jedi Interceptors, and Darth Maul’s Sith Infiltrator. The TIE Advanced boasted twin fixed blaster cannons and a cluster missile launcher. It was first deployed during the Battle of Yavin, where Vader aimed to destroy Rebel ships trying to disable the Death Star. However, he found himself ambushed by Han Solo and the Millennium Falcon, which caused him to veer off course.
2. TIE/d Defender
Originating From Grand Admiral Thrawn
Initially conceptualized by Morgan Elsbeth, the TIE Defender was designed to rectify shortcomings and flaws found in previous TIE models that prioritized cost reduction over pilot safety. Equipped with both hyperdrive capabilities and shields, this versatile fighter-bomber came armed with concussion missiles, six L-s9.3 laser cannons, and CLL-3 Ion Torpedoes. Backed by Grand Admiral Thrawn, the TIE Defender project competed for funding against Director Krennic’s Project Stardust (The Death Star). Regrettably, the TIE Defender program could have been overshadowed by Stardust if it weren’t for the bombing of its main production facility on Lothal, as depicted in Star Wars Rebels.
1. TIE Avenger
Another TIE Prototype Armed To The Teeth
Just as the TIE Defender, the TIE Avenger emerged alongside it, designed as a more aggressive version of the initial prototype model. Although it shared some wing design elements with the Defender, the Avenger had only two wings arranged in a manner similar to a standard Interceptor. Equipped with shields, hyperdrive, and an advanced tactical heads-up display, the TIE Avenger was heavily fortified and armed with an impressive assortment of diverse weapons systems.
The TIE Avenger boasted a variety of weaponry: an external starboard dual laser cannon, two rotary blaster cannons for anti-personnel use, eight laser cannons at the wing tips, twelve lasers embedded within its wings, missiles and torpedoes mounted on the wings, and a retractable heavy laser cannon. In season 2 of Andor, this particular laser cannon showed remarkable power, able to create large openings through blast doors, like when Cassian Andor made off with a prototype Avenger from Sienar Fleet Systems’ testing facility. Similar to the Defender and TIE Advanced, the Avenger wasn’t mass-produced because of its high cost. However, it stands as one of the most awe-inspiring and formidable TIE fighters in the entire Star Wars universe.
