Release Date: January 29, 2025

A four-part documentary series titled “American Manhunt: O.J. Simpson” is produced by Floyd Russ, who previously directed “American Manhunt: The Boston Marathon Bombing” for Netflix in 2023. Notably, “American Manhunt” is an ongoing series on Netflix, with each episode examining a different criminal case. In this installment, Russ delves into the O.J. The Netflix documentary titled “American Manhunt” delves deeply into interviews with detectives who were involved in the case during the 1990s and a thorough analysis of the investigation’s errors. Although this subject has been extensively covered in numerous documentaries, “American Manhunt” still provides food for thought. As John Anderson from The Wall Street Journal notes, the editing by David Tillman and Patrick Nelson Barnes is commendable given the complexity of the case and its pace. He further points out that it effectively demonstrates the societal harm the case caused in its wake.

‘Chaos: The Manson Murders’

Release Date: March 6, 2025

Under the guidance of Errol Morris, the documentary film titled “CHAOS: The Manson Murders” was created. This film is an adaptation from the 2019 non-fiction book by Tom O’Neill and Dan Piepenbring. The Manson Family cult has continued to captivate and send shivers down spines since the gruesome 1969 murders that claimed the lives of Abigail Folger, Wojciech Frykowski, Steven Parent, Jay Sebring, Sharon Tate (who was pregnant at the time), Leno LaBianca, and Rosemary LaBianca.

The movie, Chaos: The Manson Murders, delves into various speculations regarding the reasons behind the murders, spanning from secretive government plots to psychological experiments. However, this extensive exploration might be overly ambitious for a film that spans just an hour and thirty-five minutes, leaving some details inadequately addressed. Despite this, those intrigued by cult studies may find it hard to resist this documentary. Critics, however, suggest that the concept underlying the film could prove more captivating than the movie itself. As Daniel Fienberg for The Hollywood Reporter puts it, the documentary is “a narrative about the desire for narratives when confronted with the inexplicable.

It sheds light on the day’s harrowing events and their aftermath through interviews with survivors, law enforcement officials, as well as utilizing archival footage and reenactments.

Some viewers feel the documentary movie effectively summarizes the events, yet could gain from having more runtime. Currently, it spans just 1 hour and 22 minutes, leaving little room to delve deeper into various aspects. The emotional testimonies of eyewitnesses are profoundly impactful, but overall, the film doesn’t seem to bring much fresh perspective to the topic.
