Given that it’s been confirmed that Superman will introduce various other DC heroes beyond the main character, fans have pondered if the DC Universe has its own adaptation of the Justice League. Unlike the MCU, the DC Universe is a world where metahumans and superpowered individuals have long been present, as suggested in Creature Commandos. This raises questions about whether the Justice League already exists in some form, with Superman potentially joining an established team rather than being one of its founders.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly regarding the upcoming Superman movie, James Gunn discussed the possibility of a larger shared DC universe. He hinted at the existence of a team-up, but clarified that it wouldn’t be the Justice League as we know it. Instead, the film will introduce an original group called The Justice Gang. This team differs from the Justice League because they are “good, not saintly.” As for the potential future of the Justice League within the DC Universe, Superman actor David Corenswet remained vague, suggesting:

That idea sounds fantastic! To be honest, I don’t usually plan ahead like that because it’s better not to get too attached to specific outcomes only for them to change. Instead, I prefer to stay in the dark about things and then enjoy the surprise when James fills me in on what’s happening. If Justice League is something he’s thinking about, that sounds great to me. I’ll keep it at the back of my mind and we’ll see how things develop.

Who Will Be in the DCU’s Justice League?

In the occasional scenes featuring the Justice Gang in Superman, it seems they’re a corporation-funded squad, as suggested by Maxwell Lord (Sean Gunn), who is also seen in Peacemaker Season 2 with Hawkgirl and Guy Gardner interviewing John Cena’s character, Christopher Smith/Peacemaker, for a prospective role on the team. Gunn may be subtly critiquing corporate control of superheroes, possibly suggesting that what sets the Justice League apart is their independence from corporate influence. Despite Bruce Wayne/Batman being part of the team, the Justice League won’t be under the sway of Wayne Enterprises.

As the Justice League enters the DC Universe, fans are left guessing which superheroes will join their ranks. The main trio consists of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. Currently, a movie titled “The Brave and the Bold” is being developed for Batman, and James Gunn has confirmed work on a new “Wonder Woman” film, ensuring that the DC Trinity is covered.

On the other hand, the upcoming movie “Lanterns” will introduce two beloved Green Lantern characters, Hal Jordan and John Stewart. With Isabela Merced cast as Hawkgirl in a future “Superman” production, there’s speculation that Gunn’s Justice League might mirror the team from the DC Animated Universe series by incorporating both Hawkgirl and John Stewart/Green Lantern.

As a fan, I often find myself pondering over the potential members of the Justice League. Normally, it boasts seven members, leaving two vacant spots. It’s not just Aquaman or The Flash who could step into those roles; there are numerous other heroes from the DC Universe who seem tailor-made for the League. Think about Supergirl, Mister Terrific, Metamorpho, Blue Beetle, even Peacemaker.

Furthermore, there are characters that fans have longed to see in live-action films – characters like Zatanna, Vixen, Martian Manhunter, and Captain Atom. These characters could bring immense power and diversity to the team.

Unfortunately, the DCEU didn’t quite get the Justice League right. But here’s hoping that Gunn and DC Studios can deliver a feature film version that truly does justice to this legendary team.
