Umbrella Academy Showrunner Addresses Allegations

As a die-hard fan who has binge-watched every episode of The Umbrella Academy multiple times, I must say that the recent allegations against showrunner Steve Blackman have left me feeling conflicted and concerned. On one hand, I’ve loved the journey of this unique and captivating series, and the thought of it ending is heartbreaking. On the other hand, the accusations of a toxic work environment and inappropriate behavior are troubling to say the least.

In light of recent developments, The Umbrella Academy has concluded its four-season stint on Netflix. Though there remains speculation about potential spin-offs, the fourth season debuted amidst allegations against showrunner Steve Blackman, who reportedly fostered a hostile work environment, with Season 4 co-showrunner Jesse McKeown also voicing concerns. Now, Blackman has responded publicly to these accusations.

Concerning allegations that Blackman made offensive and harassing comments towards his subordinates, the showrunner clarified to The Hollywood Reporter that such reports were “not accurate.” He further explained, “They aren’t correct… The truth is, I don’t acknowledge those statements because I didn’t make them. It’s disheartening, but I am extremely proud of Umbrella Academy’s journey. I back all these individuals wholeheartedly as we have collaborated diligently together, and I hold immense respect for each one of them.”

Blackman also denied the allegations that he treated anyone unfairly.

Blackman stated, “Every person has their unique viewpoint, yet mine is that I treated everyone impartially. I made an effort to ensure everyone’s opinions were considered and valued. Working in a writers room can be challenging, and sometimes your vision may not prevail… However, I believe I respected all the writers and am satisfied with my actions and treatment of everyone on that show.”

As for the future, Blackman shared his initial ideas about what a spin-off might be about.

Ultimately, the decision lies with Netflix regarding the future of the series, considering multiple factors. However, I believe there’s potential for compelling narratives focusing on young Hazel (Cameron Britton) and Cha-Cha (Mary J. Blige). The Commission also presents opportunities for engaging stories, as do other secondary characters. What makes our show unique is that we can intertwine the stories of our main characters whenever desired, given the nature of our time-traveling universe, allowing encounters with any character at any point.

All four seasons of The Umbrella Academy are now streaming on Netflix.
