Ubisoft Quietly Confirms It’s Working On A New Ghost Recon Game

It’s worth mentioning that Ubisoft is indeed developing a fresh installment in the popular Ghost Recon series. This information, which had been speculated for quite some time, was officially verified by Ubisoft’s president, Yves Guillemot, during what appeared to be a lively shareholder gathering last week.

As a dedicated follower, I was thrilled to learn about the impending untitled Ghost Recon game, a revelation initially broken by Game File. This exciting news emerged from Ubisoft’s discussion about their background in live-service games. Speaking with pride, Guillemot highlighted their triumph with Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege and added, “Beyond the iconic game I’ve just mentioned, our aim is to further strengthen our presence in the burgeoning market by continually improving our existing offerings and leveraging upcoming releases like The Division and Ghost Recon.

In simpler terms, Frederick Duguet, Ubisoft’s CFO, highlighted an upcoming Ghost Recon game as a first-person shooter, suggesting that the next installment in the series will adopt this perspective. While some Ghost Recon games have featured first-person views, since 2006’s Advanced Warfighter, the series has predominantly been presented as a third-person shooter. This change marks a significant shift for the franchise.

It’s not surprising that Ubisoft is releasing another first-person live-service Ghost Recon game, given the massive success of Ghost Recon Wildlands in 2017 and the subsequent release of Breakpoint, though the latter had a mixed reception. Both games received substantial post-release updates from the developer. Controversially, Ubisoft integrated NFTs, a type of digital collectible based on cryptocurrency and blockchain technology, into Breakpoint in 2021.

Although it was announced that there will be a new Ghost Recon game, neither Guillemot nor Duguet specified a release date, indicating that the game may not be coming out soon. In the interim, Ubisoft is staying active by splitting off several of its main series into a new division, which is being jointly managed by Guillemot’s son, as per their agreement with Tencent. Additionally, Ubisoft has given the go-ahead for a Netflix adaptation based on its successful Assassin’s Creed games.
