Lately, there has been much discussion about a significant downsizing at Microsoft that impacted more than 9,000 employees. Unfortunately, it appears Ubisoft is following suit, as they had previously announced plans for cost reductions amounting to 110 million euros in May. However, the number of potential layoffs at Ubisoft is considerably less compared to Microsoft’s situation.
Layoffs at Red Storm
According to IGN, it has been reported that nineteen individuals have parted ways with Red Storm Entertainment studio. This division is known for creating games like Star Trek: Bridge Crew and the Tom Clancy series. Ubisoft has acknowledged layoffs in a statement they shared with IGN’s editorial team.
Today, Ubisoft chose to cut 19 positions at Red Storm Entertainment. This move is part of our ongoing, strategic restructuring and cost-cutting measures worldwide, reflecting the demands of projects in the studio. Although it wasn’t an easy choice, it was a crucial one in line with our operational priorities. We will continue to provide generous severance packages, extended healthcare benefits, and job placement assistance for those affected. We value the dedication and contributions they’ve made to Ubisoft.
As a devoted fan, I must share that the company has clarified that only Red Storm Entertainment seems to be undergoing changes, with no other studios reportedly affected by the reduction in workforce. However, it remains unclear exactly how many people are still on board and what projects they’re currently focusing on. Previously, Red Storm was working on projects like Splinter Cell VR and The Division Heartland, which were later canceled, as well as XDefiant, a game that appears to have met its end.
Red Storm Entertainment, established in 1996 with the involvement of Tom Clancy, was primarily dedicated to creating video games inspired by his novels. A few years later, in 2000, Ubisoft acquired the studio. Throughout its more than three decades, it has produced games like Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six. More recently, it has shifted its focus to assisting other departments and working on virtual reality productions.
