Ubisoft Is Reportedly Considering A Major Change To Its Structure

As a long-time fan and follower of Ubisoft‘s incredible journey, I find myself both intrigued and slightly apprehensive about the recent reports suggesting potential changes for this gaming giant. The idea of Tencent buying out Ubisoft or even taking it private is certainly interesting, given Tencent’s substantial stake in the company already.

It’s said that both Ubisoft and Tencent are exploring various strategies aimed at strengthening their businesses and avoiding any further decreases in their share prices.

It’s important to note that there’s no certainty about the success of these talks, but both parties seem open to exploring other options as well.

At the close of April, Tencent owned approximately 9.2% of Ubisoft’s total voting rights, while currently it possesses a 49.9% share in the indirect holding company controlled by the Guillemot Brothers (as of present records). Last month, minor shareholder and investment firm AJ Investments publicly expressed their suggestions for Ubisoft to transition into a privately-held entity and reconsider its overall strategy, through a published open letter.

Over the past month, Ubisoft’s stocks hit a record low since 2015, dropping by 12.6% following the release of Star Wars Outlaws, which saw lower-than-anticipated sales. To address this, Ubisoft has postponed Assassin’s Creed Shadows from its initial November 15 release date to February 14, 2025. This decision is based on the insights gained from Star Wars Outlaws’ performance. In addition, Ubisoft aims to attract more customers by releasing their games simultaneously on Steam at launch.
