Over the past few years, Ubisoft has faced some extremely tough times, causing many people to predict its downfall. Back in February 2021, a share in this French publisher cost €84.60. However, that price has dropped significantly to 12.35 euros, representing a staggering drop of more than 85%. At present, there’s no sign of improvement, and it seems like Assassin’s Creed: Shadows might be the last hope for the studio.
In this article, we’ll be sharing Tom Henderson‘s insights about the current status of Ubisoft, having been compiled by the founder of Insider Gaming.
Tencent’s acquisition of Ubisoft
It was unexpectedly announced in October that there were plans for Tencent to purchase Ubisoft, intending to make it a privately-held company. However, this deal ultimately fell through, with Henderson suggesting that the Guillemot brothers’ determination to maintain ownership as the primary cause, a condition that Tencent may not have been willing to accommodate.
From my perspective as a gamer, I believe both parties are employing a strategic game of patience. I, as Tencent, am planning to gradually accumulate more shares, inch by inch increasing my control. Meanwhile, the Guillemot brothers seem to be adopting a wait-and-see approach, likely holding out until February when Assassin’s Creed: Shadows is set to drop.

If the game proves to be a hit, the negotiating leverage of the Guillemot brothers will strengthen, opening up more possibilities when discussions resume. Conversely, if the game fails, Tencent could potentially acquire more shares at a reduced price.
According to Henderson’s understanding, the Guillemot brothers stand to benefit, given that initial pre-order numbers for “AC: Shadows” were substantial, even though they didn’t reach the heights seen with “AC: Valhalla.
Poor management
Subsequently, the reporter observed that the management’s longstanding issue seems to revolve around favoring personal relationships and family ties, leading to a culture of reciprocal support among themselves, often at the expense of the countless dissatisfied programmers within their ranks.
Henderson pointed out numerous projects that faced considerable issues for this reason, using instances like Skull and Bones, Beyond Good & Evil 2, and XDefiant as illustrations. Yet, there are also lesser-known titles, such as Project U, unveiled in 2022, which had to revert to the design stage after five years of development more recently.

As a dedicated fan, I’ve been following the recent developments at Ubisoft closely. According to Henderson’s reports, it seems that none of the people he interviewed are optimistic about the September investigation leading to any substantial changes within the company. From what I gather, many former and current employees believe that Yves Guillemot is deeply committed to Ubisoft and would rather stand by the company, even if it means maintaining his position at the helm.
It’s interesting to note that Ubisoft conducts annual surveys where employees can provide feedback, albeit anonymously. However, some of these studies have been met with relatively low trust, with trust levels ranging between 15% and 20%.
Future of the French company
2025 has already shown promise for the French company, and according to Henderson, a significant factor will be the success of their game “Shadows” and Ubisoft’s efforts to regain player trust to prevent privatization.
As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but share some exciting news! The same company that brought us our favorite game is also working on a bunch more, set to drop by the end of 2026. Titles like the Splinter Cell Remake, Far Cry 7, AC: Black Flag Remake, AC: Hexe, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake, and even the legendary Rayman are all in the pipeline! These could very well become the next big hits. Can’t wait to get my hands on them!

However, the journalist highlights that the company is persistently investing substantial funds into ventures that seemingly have no chance of success. In particular, they mentioned Project U, Project Scout (a battle royale similar to Apex Legends), Project Maverick (an extraction shooter), and games centered around NFTs.
It remains uncertain what lies ahead for Ubisoft, but as things stand now, they find themselves in a rather dull predicament.
It’s clear that Ubisoft finds itself at a crucial juncture. Regardless of the direction they choose, transformative leadership changes are essential for them to thrive.
