Ubisoft Denies Reports XDefiant Is Dying, Provides Updated Year One Roadmap

As a seasoned gamer with years of multiplayer shooting experience under my belt, I must say I’m quite intrigued by Ubisoft’s recent updates for XDefiant. It’s heartening to see them address concerns about hit registration and listen to the community’s feedback. The roadmap looks promising, with new maps, guns, and factions on the horizon, not to mention the quality-of-life improvements.

Ubisoft recently unveiled an updated plan for its free-to-play shooter game, XDefiant, on their blog. This roadmap outlines significant improvements and fresh content that will be rolled out in the future. Contrary to some rumors suggesting XDefiant is faltering, Ubisoft asserts that the game is thriving as they’ve allocated extra resources to the development team to address major problems such as hit registration issues.

The blog post starts by addressing the issues players have been having with the hit registration in XDefiant, which doesn’t work as reliably as some other multiplayer shooters. The simplified explanation given is that currently packets are sent twice between players, but the industry standard is four times. In order to achieve this, the XDefiant team needs to reduce the size of their packets so they can send them more times. No solid release date was given, but the team hopes to make significant progress by the end of Season 2.

In a recent blog update, Ubisoft refutes rumors suggesting that XDefiant is facing issues within the company. However, it doesn’t address all the specific claims directly. An article published by Insider Gaming in late August suggested that player numbers for XDefiant have declined dramatically since its launch, and if Season 3 fails to revive interest, the game might be at risk of being shut down. Contrary to these concerns, the blog post asserts that “XDefiant is not on its deathbed,” emphasizing that enhancing the player experience remains a top priority for Ubisoft.

The blog post also includes an updated roadmap for XDefiant. It reiterates that each season will include three new maps, three new guns, and a new faction to play, but now it also lists progression changes and quality of life changes. Season 2 includes player collision and footstep audio improvements, in addition to event challenges and improved battle pass progression.

Mark Rubin, the executive producer of XDefiant, announced via Twitter that his team is still diligently working on the Free-for-all game mode and will share a new estimated release date as soon as it’s available. Additionally, Rubin confirmed that while updates planned for later seasons, such as the introduction of the prestige system in Season 3, aren’t being delayed, they are still under development.

On September 18th, we’ll unveil Season 2 of XDefiant, featuring a fresh faction, the Highwaymen, along with an array of new weapons for your viewing pleasure. In related news, Ubisoft has announced layoffs, contributing to the more than 10,000 job losses in the gaming industry this year.
