Ubisoft Canceled A Splinter Cell Game, And It Morphed Into The Ill-Fated XDefiant – Report

Originally, Ubisoft was developing a new Splinter Cell game with a focus on ongoing updates and live service features. However, the project was eventually transformed into XDefiant, which Ubisoft unfortunately discontinued shortly after its release. This information comes from Nick Herman, a former developer on the game who now leads AdHoc Studios, the team behind the recently launched and successful episodic game, Dispatch.

Herman explained to Bloomberg that he was thrilled to contribute to the project’s revival, noting it had been inactive for some time. He and his team believed they could create a compelling narrative that fans would really enjoy.

According to Bloomberg, the game was being developed for several months. Herman also stated that Ubisoft intended to include ongoing, service-based features in the game.

Herman explained that they attempted to create a story-driven game based on the General Accountability Standards (GAAS). They experimented with several interesting ideas and built a number of prototypes, trying to figure out how to make the concept work.

According to the report, Ubisoft stopped focusing on the Splinter Cell game and instead began working on a new project intended to rival Call of Duty. This project was XDefiant, led by a former executive from Call of Duty, Mark Rubin. However, XDefiant was cancelled after just one year, and its development team was subsequently laid off.

Herman explained they had high hopes for creating something special, but then came to the realization that things change and what once mattered no longer does. He added that this is a frequent experience in gaming.

Although the previously planned Splinter Cell game has been cancelled, a full remake is now being developed. Beyond gaming, the Splinter Cell TV series, Deathwatch, premiered on Netflix in October and has been picked up for another season. Plans for a live-action movie, however, seem to have been dropped.
