Uber is letting women avoid male drivers and riders in the US

Uber will soon let women in the United States choose to avoid being paired with men during rides.

Beginning next month, the company is set to introduce nationwide its ‘Preference for Women’ options. This means female passengers can select drivers who identify as female, and similarly, female drivers can choose female passengers.

Objective: Enhancing comfort, safety, and freedom for women utilizing our platform, providing them with greater options, assurance, and adaptability while using Uber.

Rolling out nationwide after tests

The new features will be gradually introduced to users residing in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Detroit from late July 2025 up until August 2025.

Starting next month in the U.S., Uber will offer an option for both female drivers and passengers to opt for ride matches exclusively with members of the same gender.

When making a ride request, females can now opt for ‘Female Drivers.’ Even if the waiting period exceeds their preference, they retain the flexibility to accept rides with quicker pick-up times instead.

Initially, Uber introduced the Women Rider Preference option in 2019, coinciding with a law allowing women to operate vehicles in Saudi Arabia. Subsequently, this feature has been made available across approximately 40 different nations.

Camiel Irving, VP of Operations in the US and Canada, stated that we’ve put our product through trials, taken feedback, and fine-tuned it based on user habits in countries like Germany and France. We’ve tailored the feature to match the actions of real-world riders and drivers,” said Camiel Irving.
