Tyler Perry’s ‘Divorce in the Black’ Drives More U.S. Prime Video Subscriptions Than Any Other Amazon MGM Movie, Studio Says (EXCLUSIVE)

As a longtime fan of Tyler Perry’s work and someone who has witnessed his journey from humble beginnings to Hollywood powerhouse, I must say that this latest accomplishment with “Divorce in the Black” truly warms my heart. It’s not just about the impressive viewership numbers or the boost in Prime Video subscriptions; it’s about seeing a fellow dreamer defy odds and create stories that resonate deeply with audiences.

As a dedicated cinephile, I couldn’t help but be captivated by Tyler Perry’s latest masterpiece, “Divorce in the Black.” The film’s enthralling narrative didn’t just reel in a massive audience – Nielsen reports it garnered an impressive 498 million minutes of viewing time within its first four days on Amazon Prime Video. But what truly sets this soap drama apart is its impact off-screen. According to Amazon, “Divorce in the Black” has generated more new subscribers to Prime Video in the U.S. than any other movie produced by Amazon MGM Studios to date. Simply put, this film is more than just a movie; it’s a cultural phenomenon that continues to captivate and grow its audience.

The announcement follows “Divorce in the Black” being listed as the third most-streamed movie on Nielsen’s Top 10 chart for July 8-14, trailing behind “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” on Netflix and “If” on Paramount+. When considering its nearly 2.5-hour runtime, this equates to approximately 3.5 million viewers based on its total view time of 498 million minutes during that period.

Luminate’s weekly charts are still tracking the rise of the movie “Divorce in the Black.” In its third week on Amazon Prime Video, the film clocked an impressive 93.2 million minutes watched from July 26 to August 1. (It’s important to note that EbMaster and Luminate have a common owner in Penske Media Corp.)

“Divorce in Black” introduces Meagan Good as Ava, a young bank professional who’s deeply entangled in a turbulent marriage with Dallas (Cory Hardrict). However, when Dallas leaves their relationship, Ava initially grieves and tries relentlessly to save it. The synopsis then unveils an unexpected twist: as destiny steps in, it brings forth Dallas’ deceitful actions that ruined their marriage, and moreover, had previously hindered Ava from finding her true soulmate’s love. Perry, the writer and director of the film, created this piece under his four-picture agreement with Amazon Studios. He also collaborated on production with Good, Angi Bones, Will Areu, and Dianne Ashford.

Amazon declined to disclose the exact number of subscribers or specify which Amazon MGM film had previously led to the most significant increase in subscriptions. However, they had earlier claimed that “Road House” was a top performer, boasting over 50 million viewers worldwide within its first two weeks upon release. The upcoming sequel of this movie, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, was hinted at by Amazon MGM Studio head Jennifer Salke during her debut presentation in May.
