In simple terms, Dan Clancy, Twitch’s CEO, has shared his vision for Twitch in 2025, emphasizing on enhancing the quality of watching videos on mobile devices as one of his main priorities.
In August 2024, Twitch unveiled an updated mobile app design, introducing a TikTok-style feed that runs vertically and showcases videos and live streams from users you’re following.
Users swiftly demanded a reversion to the old design, as numerous people on social media labeled the update as “unwanted” or “poor quality.
CEO Dan Clancy announced on February 27, 2025, that Twitch will introduce an innovative mobile app feature allowing content creators to broadcast in a vertical format.
Twitch set to launch vertical streaming
In a public announcement on their official blog, Clancy expressed their intention to facilitate easier content discovery for viewers and simultaneously support streamers in expanding their online communities via the Discovery and Clips sections on Twitch’s mobile application.
In order to facilitate this, Twitch plans to introduce a feature that allows streamers to offer videos in both landscape and portrait orientation. Notably, portrait videos will be displayed on the Discovery feed.
During mid-year, we’ll introduce a feature that allows for both landscape and portrait video streaming via our Enhanced Broadcasting service. The mobile app will adapt to display vertical videos based on your phone’s orientation.
Apart from enhancing content loading speed, they’re also focusing on refining the quality of the Discovery feed itself, with an aim to deliver smoother streams and better overall content quality.
During 2025, Twitch isn’t planning to limit new features to just vertical streams. In his public letter, Dan Clancy also hinted at a change that will allow most streamers to start earning money from their content the moment they begin streaming, without having to reach Affiliate status first – a move that removes the need for a subscriber button until then.
