Twitch responds to accusations of not being a “gaming website” anymore

As a long-time Twitch user, I must say that I appreciate the platform’s evolution over the years. From its humble beginnings as a gaming-focused site to the diverse content it offers now, Twitch has truly become a hub for various communities. I find myself enjoying Just Chatting streams just as much as I enjoy watching my favorite gamers.

In a recent live broadcast known as the “Patch Notes” stream, the Head of Community and Senior Producer for Twitch responded to a viewer’s query about why Twitch no longer appears to be just a “gaming website”.

Twitch initially gained fame as a platform for streaming video games. However, throughout its existence, it has expanded significantly and now hosts a diverse range of content, from live chats and travel vlogs to many other types of broadcasts.

In reality, “Just Chatting” is among the most popular categories on the platform; however, an increase in streamers engaging with their audience directly, rather than through gaming, has raised worries among certain viewers.

During an October 16th livestream, I stumbled upon a discussion on the Patch Notes, where Twitch’s Head of Community, ‘merrykish,’ and Senior Producer, ‘ZachariusD,’ took questions from fellow gamers like me.

“Why is Twitch no longer a gaming site?” one viewer asked.

Kish responded, “In my opinion, Twitch primarily functions as a platform for gaming.” He added, “While there’s an immense amount of gaming on Twitch, the most popular category over the past three years is Just Chatting.

What’s presented here speaks volumes about the site, its audience, and even those who appreciate it. Essentially, the community determines what’s trending and relevant on Twitch.

Gaming remains our main focus, it’s what makes our platform truly special. However, there’s a growing fascination with simply observing streamers chat and interact. The success of the Just Chatting category indicates that viewers are interested in more than just games. This diversity is fantastic, and we’re committed to fostering it alongside all the exciting games you enjoy watching.

Reactions to Kish’s response were varied, with certain spectators supporting her stance, whereas others criticized the “Just Chatting” category for potentially inappropriate content, including live hot tub broadcasts and upcoming debatable topics.

As a dedicated fan, I appreciate that Twitch takes the safety of younger viewers seriously. They provide streamers with options like labeling their broadcasts with content classifications and emphasizing their attire policy, as highlighted in their latest Enforcement Notes update.

Twitch representatives have announced that an upcoming live stream will provide clarity on the recently discussed dress code policy for Virtual YouTubers (VTubers), who feel affected by the Enforcement Notice. Notably, Twitch maintains that these rules apply equally to both real-life and digital streamers.
