Twitch CEO under fire for “shamelessly” promoting his own channel in other streams

As a devoted admirer, I find myself expressing some concerns about the recent actions of Twitch CEO Dan Clancy. Some users have raised eyebrows over what appears to be self-promotion on various streams, which they’ve described as lacking subtlety and potentially crossing a line.

On July 18, the CEO of Twitch spent a total of four hours streaming live, contributing to a continuous charity event. Notably, before this broadcast, it was noticed that Clancy had been actively promoting themselves in various other popular Twitch channels, soliciting support by humbly requesting “raids.

For those not familiar with the term, a raid on Twitch refers to a streamer directing all their viewers to another channel when they finish streaming for the day. Although asking for raids isn’t explicitly forbidden by Twitch’s Terms of Service or Community Guidelines, it is generally viewed as poor manners. Frequent requests, however, can approach spam levels and would then be considered policy violations.

According to his account, Clancy disregarded the ethical considerations and instead requested raids for a future charity stream. Now that he’s been exposed, the head of the streaming firm is facing intense criticism.

In simpler terms, “Clancy’s chatlog on Twitch indicates that he is openly asking fellow streamers for raid support when they finish streaming, with the intention of boosting his own stream during a charitable event for St. Jude’s as part of the GCX Marathon.

The identical message was broadcast over at least five platforms, such as Gassymexican, Fanfan, and several others that collectively have over a million followers. In one situation, a moderator temporarily banned the CEO of Twitch due to what they deemed as self-promotion. As a result, Clancy’s account was muted from chatting for 10 minutes.

During this coming week, from July 14th to the 21st, Clancy is trying to draw attention to his segment in the GCX Marathon, a seven-day streaming event. The goal of this event is to gather funds for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

Currently, our combined efforts have amassed more than $350,000 in charitable contributions. During his four-hour live stream, Clancy played a significant role in raising approximately $4,000.

In simple terms, the Twitch Terms of Service and Community Guidelines don’t explicitly prohibit or allow self-promotion across different chat rooms. Instead, it’s usually up to the individual streamer to decide their own rules regarding self-promotion.

Yet, it’s evident that there are definite guidelines for what constitutes “spam,” and Clancy’s actions seem to approach those boundaries.

Our guidelines warn against behaviors like spamming and dishonesty, as they harm users’ experience, lower trust in our platform, and can trick content makers, sponsors, and spectators alike.

Anything that disturbs, halts, damages, or infringes upon the authenticity of Twitch’s services, another user’s enjoyment, or their devices in any way, is not allowed.

As a follower, I can’t help but feel let down when the CEO remains silent on the Ray J botting scandal. It seems like basic decency and transparency should be expected in such situations.

Following its spread on social media platforms, particularly by streamer Zach Bussey, a wave of indignation soon followed as people expressed their opinions.

One VTuber commented, ‘It’s not just disregardful, but it’s also clearly unsolicited.’ Another user added, ‘Impressive… Even if it’s for a good cause, that level of disrespect is still quite shameful.’

Content creator Gothalion, a co-founder of the charitable event, also stepped forward to comment on the issue, describing Clancy’s behavior as “extremely impolite.

“How did you not set up cameos and corporate support? Why was this reactive instead of proactive?”
