Twitch CEO reveals most of their revenue is from viewers supporting streamers

In simpler terms, Dan Clancy, the head of Twitch, has disclosed that a significant portion of the platform’s earnings is generated through viewers who back their preferred streamers financially, rather than through any extraordinary Amazon transactions.

Over a prolonged period, Twitch has been the undisputed leader in the realm of live streaming. Competitors like YouTube Live, Facebook Gaming, and others have attempted to dethrone it, but so far, Twitch – an Amazon-owned platform – remains at the forefront.

As a passionate gamer, I’ve heard whispers about Twitch potentially draining Amazon’s coffers to the tune of an eye-watering $2 billion. Rumors have even suggested that it might be time for Amazon to let go or shut down this beloved streaming platform. Yet, so far, these speculations seem unfounded, and Twitch has been announcing some major transformations slated for the upcoming year.

Despite the substantial support from Amazon and numerous advertisers on Twitch, one might assume a significant portion of their income comes from ad sales or similar sources. However, this is not accurate.

Two-thirds of Twitch’s revenue is actually subs

As per Twitch CEO Dan Clancy’s statement, most of Twitch’s income is generated when viewers opt to subscribe to their preferred streamers and offer them support.

A fact often overlooked is that around 66% of our income is generated through viewers who financially back the content creators they admire,” he shared with Axios during a gathering in Cannes, France, on June 17.

Earlier, during TwitchCon, Clancy had mentioned something comparable to TheMediaLeader, emphasizing that this statistic often leaves people in shock due to the heavy dependence on ad revenue among other platforms.

During the TwitchCon discussion, the Twitch CEO highlighted that viewers are purchasing patronage, social standing within the community, and perks as a part of their subscription.

Frequently, when I converse with brands, I express that this demonstrates their emotional bond with the streamers and the content they are consuming.

To expand their reach, Twitch is experimenting with Sponsored Subscriptions. In essence, this means that brands can aid content creators by offering discounted subscription plans to specific channels. Twitch has previously implemented a similar approach during SUBtember events, but this new feature could be utilized at any point in time.
