Twisters Movie Doesn't Reference Climate Change, Director Says Movies Shouldn't Have A Message

As a longtime fan of disaster movies and someone who has lived through my fair share of tornado warnings growing up in the Midwest, I am both excited and disappointed by the new Twisters movie coming out this week.

As an avid movie fan, I’m excited that the new disaster film “Twisters” hits theaters this coming Friday. However, if you’re hoping for a deep exploration of climate change in this movie, I have to disappoint you. According to director Lee Isaac Chung, he deliberately chose not to incorporate such a message into the film. For him, it was essential that “Twisters” be seen as an entertaining and thrilling disaster movie rather than a vehicle for delivering a specific message.

He shared with CNN that he simply aimed to ensure the film doesn’t convey any particular message. According to him, movies aren’t supposed to be message-centric.

As a gamer, I believe in letting experiences unfold naturally rather than force-feeding messages. The cinematic journey should mirror our reality, providing insight and understanding through immersion, not sermons.

Based on National Geographic’s report, there isn’t much proof supporting the claim that tornadoes are occurring more frequently than they did in the past. A July 2023 study published by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) indicates that the annual count of reported tornadoes remains consistent. However, according to NOAA, it is challenging to distinguish the impact of climate change on tornadoes compared to observable trends in temperature and precipitation.

Up until now, most research has failed to establish a clear link between past shifts in tornado patterns and a warming climate, according to the government agency.

As a gamer, I’ve noticed an intriguing pattern while exploring the virtual world of weather phenomena. In the Midwest region of the United States, popularly known as “Tornado Alley,” there’s growing evidence that supercell thunderstorms leading to tornadoes are occurring more frequently than before. Surprisingly enough, research indicates that some places have experienced an increase in tornadoes during months typically considered tornado-free.

In the United States during the first half of 2024, over sixty people tragically lost their lives due to tornadoes. According to Victor Gensini, an associate professor specializing in meteorology and severe weather at Northern Illinois University, further investigation is necessary to ascertain the degree to which climate change influences tornado occurrences. “It’s reasonable to assume that climate change contributes, but determining if it’s a 10%, 5%, or even 1% factor remains uncertain without more comprehensive studies,” Gensini explained to USA Today.

I’m a huge fan of the new movie “Twister,” which features Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Anthony Ramos, and Maura Tierney in the lead roles. This exciting production is a long-awaited continuation of the franchise, 28 years after the release of the original Twister in 1996. That classic film starred Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt. The brilliant late Michael Crichton, known for his work on “Jurassic Park,” wrote the screenplay for the first movie alongside his wife Anne-Marie Martin.
