The classic Twisted Metal game significantly shaped the PlayStation 1’s identity when launched in 1995. However, since the reboot in 2012, it hasn’t appeared on Sony consoles. There was a Twisted Metal live-service game under development, which might have brought the series back to life, but unfortunately, that project got canceled. Now, one of the developers from the canceled Twisted Metal game has revealed some insights into what we could have experienced.
UI Programmer Hugo Silva shared several images from the Twisted Metal live-service game on his website. However, these images are obscured due to a nondisclosure agreement. As expected, vehicular combat is prominent in the game. Interestingly, the screenshots suggest that there will also be third-person shooter gameplay, hinting at action extending beyond the vehicles – a departure for the franchise.
At Firesprite, one of Sony’s PlayStation Studios’ developers, they were working on a live-service game based on Twisted Metal. However, the project was scrapped before it could fully mature due to a decision made prior to last year’s unsuccessful Concord launch, which led Sony to reconsider their approach towards live-service games.
There’s uncertainty about whether Sony intends to resurrect the Twisted Metal game franchise in the future, despite the recent surge in its popularity due to the live-action TV show on Peacock. A trailer for Twisted Metal Season 2 has been released by the streaming platform, featuring Anthony Mackie as John Doe, Stephanie Beatriz as Quiet, Will Arnett as Sweet Tooth’s voice, Joe Seanoa (Samoa Joe) as the on-screen Sweet Tooth, and Barry’s Anthony Carrigan as Calypso. The series is set to return to Peacock later this year with these stars in their respective roles.
