In a joint announcement on Tuesday, Schibsted Media, headquartered in Oslo, has agreed to purchase the television and media division from Telia Group, which operates in the Nordic and Baltic regions. This division is spearheaded by prominent TV companies such as TV4 in Sweden and MTV in Finland.
The projected deal, valued at approximately SEK 6.55 billion ($615.3 million), is expected to finalize no later than the third quarter of 2025, assuming the standard regulatory clearance is granted.
Telia’s Television and Media sector boasts approximately 1,200 employees spread across Sweden and Finland. In Sweden, this sector encompasses TV4, Sweden’s foremost advertising-supported and pay-TV channels, the TV4 Play streaming service, as well as Fotbollskanalen and Köket websites. In Finland, the operations involve MTV, a long-standing commercial broadcaster, its pay-TV channels, and Katsomo, their streaming platform.
Schibsted Media, owned by Tinius Trust, announced that a new agreement signifies their continued dedication to financing independent journalism, creating top-notch content, and developing appealing media services throughout the Nordic region. This company oversees Norway’s leading news brands such as Aftenposten, VG, E24, Bergens Tidende, among others.
According to CEO Siv Juvik Tveitnes, TV4 and MTV are reliable and autonomous sources of news, significant pillars in upholding democratic principles, and well-known for their top-notch entertainment and drama production. In light of this, Schibsted Media is an excellent choice as a long-term proprietor in the future.
In Sweden, a Norwegian group owns digital media brands such as Aftonbladet, Svenska Dagbladet, Omni, and podcast platform Podme. This gives them the opportunity to strengthen and expand their news, sports, and entertainment content across all media channels. Meanwhile, in Finland, Schibsted Media’s acquisition of MTV is considered a significant shift for them, as they were previously only present in the Finnish media scene through Podme.
In the meantime, Telia, after persistently attempting to part ways with its television and media ventures, can now channel all efforts into its primary focus: the connectivity sector of its business.
Patrik Hofbauer, the president and CEO of Telia, stated: “Our main goal is to concentrate on what Telia excels at: delivering top-notch connectivity that countless individuals depend on daily, and this deal mirrors that focus.
Telia plans on carrying on delivering the content from TV4 and MTV via their consumer television service.
By the year 2024, Telia’s TV and Media sector generated approximately SEK 8.16 billion ($766.8 million) from external sources and served around 887,000 subscribers.
