TV Globo to Bow ‘Aberto ao Publico’ in July, the First Comedy Show From New Regional Hubs across Brazil (EXCLUSIVE)

Starting from July 6th, Brazil’s primary open-TV network, TV Globo, will debut a comedy series titled “Aberto ao Publico.” This lighthearted show will span across four consecutive Sunday evenings, as revealed by Amauri Soares, the director of TV Globo and Estudios Globo, in an interview with EbMaster.

Comedian Mauricio Meirelles is set to produce a new show, with direction by Gui Cintra and Daniel Nascimento. The show will have Mauricio Meirelles, Bruna Louise, Murilo Couto, and Thiago Ventura as hosts, who will welcome a different celebrity guest in each episode, according to Soares.

Globo filmed “Aberto ao Publico” inside a Sao Paulo theater, where the live audience actively participated with the comedians and guests, employing a stand-up comedy setup.

Recently, Globo set up regional hubs in various cities throughout Brazil to expand their comedy content’s diversity. ‘Aberto ao Publico’ was the first show produced at these new locations.

The hubs consist of casual groupings, each made up of eight to ten independent comedians who hail from diverse backgrounds – social media, stand-up comedy, theater, and advertising. They operate out of a home office, overseen by a staff writer from Globo’s Comedy Division, headed by Patricia Pedrosa, within the broader company, Globo.

By the end of 2024, Globo established comedy hubs in the cities of São Paulo, Fortaleza, Goiania, Porto Alegre, and Rio de Janeiro. Noteworthy is that these hub comedians are not physically based at Globo’s production center Projac.

The São Paulo hub’s ‘Aberto ao Publico’ event showcases the burgeoning stand-up comedy scene in the city, as pointed out by Soares.

Creating comedy shows today poses a significant hurdle for networks due to the fractured nature of humor. Comedy is being explored by both amateurs and professionals on social media and in comedy clubs,” Soares noted. “In response, we chose to establish hubs that would break down the barriers between Projac and other regions of Brazil, each with their unique comedy scenes and distinctive accents.

He mentioned that concepts conceived at the centers could potentially foster a variety of programming genres, such as serials, television films, motion pictures intended for cinema screenings, along with characters and program structures.

Globo is set to unveil “Open to the Public” and its new hub at their company’s panel happening today at Rio2C.
