As a seasoned movie buff with decades of industry insights, I’ve witnessed the ebb and flow of Hollywood like the tides. The announcement of the Television Critics Association (TCA) canceling its Winter 2025 press tour is a blow that resonates deeply.
The Television Critics Association (TCA) has decided not to hold its scheduled Winter 2025 TCA press tour because it couldn’t get enough networks, studios, and streaming platforms to take part in the biannual event. This is another setback for the TCA organization, which has been finding it hard to organize a strong press tour lately, due to challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, followed by the two Hollywood strikes.
As a movie reviewer penning my thoughts, I find myself compelled to share the unfortunate news that a highly anticipated event has been called off. Jacqueline Cutler, president of the Television Critics Association, attributes this cancellation to a significant contraction within Hollywood’s industry. Despite numerous commitments from streamers, networks, and studios, the collective effort fell short of what was needed for a comprehensive press tour. To respect our members’ need to plan ahead, the decision was made by the board to set an early November deadline for this difficult call.
Cutler mentioned that the TCA intends to organize a summer tour in the year 2025, and they’re currently making efforts to bring back the event by working towards it.
This year, the TCA managed to conduct press conferences in February and July, resuming their usual biannual schedule following the cancellation of the summer 2023 TCA press tour, which was a result of the Hollywood strikes.
Typically, TCA organizes two press events annually – one during winter and another during summer. These gatherings showcase various TV shows’ casts, crew members such as writers, directors, and producers from multiple networks and streaming platforms, along with question-and-answer sessions with network executives. However, due to the pandemic in 2020, the event transitioned online. It resumed its in-person format during winter 2023, but unfortunately had to be canceled again that summer.
For the first time since 2019, this year’s TCA Awards took place in person in July. However, unlike previous years, the summer 2024 press tour was abbreviated, with only a few media outlets attending. The event lasted for a week, featuring presentations from Disney Entertainment Television, CBS, NBC, PBS, Hallmark, Starz, and CBS Studios, along with several smaller presenters.
Here is Cutler’s full memo to members:
Dear TCA Members,
We are writing with the disappointing news that the Winter TCA tour is canceled.
You’re aware that Hollywood is currently facing a significant downturn. Although multiple streamers, networks, and studios have pledged their commitment, it wasn’t sufficient for a complete press tour. Considering the importance of our members’ planning needs, we, as a board, decided to establish an early November deadline in order to make this decision with enough time.
I want to stress something that members who attended last February and July already know – those were great tours. Executives I have talked with have been exceptionally positive about the last two press tours. More importantly, each stressed wanting to participate in the Summer 2025 tour, and we are already working toward that.
Sincerely,
Jacqueline Cutler
