According to their announcement to members on Wednesday, the Television Critics Association has decided to postpone their summer press tour. Earlier, they had also canceled the winter event due to low participation from networks and studios. This time, they stated that there would be no tour after extensive discussions and negotiations.
The TCA press tour has been a topic of many discussions due to its irregular occurrences in recent times. With networks and studios no longer actively participating as they once did, along with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the double strikes in Hollywood causing numerous delays in 2023, the tour has experienced several interruptions.
Discussions regarding planning for our summer tour in 2024 have been continuous since last year,” the organization shared with its members. “We’ve reached out to every network, studio, and streaming platform about potential presentations, and met with them all in February. Leaving the meeting, we felt optimistic that the summer tour will indeed take place.
Initially in March, we had arranged six days worth of presentations. However, many of those networks subsequently informed us that the tour would not be financially feasible for them. Furthermore, there was also interest expressed from other networks, streaming platforms, and industry groups about joining us. In the end, all of them communicated that they couldn’t cover the expense of the tour,” TCA stated.
The TCA observed that “the structures that previously underpinned tours in Hollywood and journalism have evolved significantly. Broadcasting corporations have merged into only a handful, and they’ve also decreased their public relations teams. Organizing panels can be quite costly for these networks, with expenses like hotels and AV equipment adding up. In an attempt to alleviate some of these costs, the TCA Board has reduced them by half, but this adjustment didn’t go far enough.
The TCA Awards are going to find new ways to proceed without hosting a tour this year, as stated by the organization. They aim to create a fresh and innovative version of the TCA Awards ceremony and are currently considering their options. The voting process will continue in June as scheduled. Additionally, the TCA is contemplating reviewing its membership dues structure due to the absence of tours.
I’ll be joining a virtual gathering on Zoom tomorrow, where we followers will hear updates about our organization’s present situation and upcoming tours directly from the team in charge.
