As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that I, along with the Television Academy, am venturing into the world of film festivals! We’re gearing up to debut our very first TV festival, aptly named “Televerse,” this August. The grand event will take place at the bustling JW Marriott at L.A. Live in the heart of downtown Los Angeles. I can hardly wait for the magic of television to come alive on the big screen!
The Televerse event is scheduled from August 14 to August 16, slightly preceding the commencement of final-round Emmy voting which begins on August 18. Unlike other TV Academy events primarily focused on Emmy campaigning, this festival is designed to be accessible to the general public as well, with non-members also invited to participate.
As a dedicated TV enthusiast, I’m thrilled about the announcement of Televerse by the Television Academy on Thursday. This exciting event promises panels featuring this year’s Emmy-nominated shows and stars, an engaging space delving into TV production, and insights into the world of artisans and crafts behind our favorite programs. The Academy has shared that they are collaborating with partners from every studio, network, platform, and innovative tech companies to provide exclusive discussions, opportunities to meet the stars, interactive exhibits, premieres, and sneak peeks at upcoming shows. I can hardly wait!
The concept behind the festival stemmed from the need to create additional income sources for the Academy. Although the TV Academy organizes a wide variety of Phase 1 “For Your Consideration” events at their North Hollywood headquarters and other locations, they hadn’t previously arranged anything similar for Phase 2 FYC. Consequently, this is the first instance where officially endorsed FYC events will focus on Emmy nominees rather than just potential candidates.
The Television Academy is still finalizing specifics about its new platform, Televerse. At this point, they’re deciding on the costs associated with show and talent submissions. For For Your Consideration (FYC) events hosted within their premises, particularly when it comes to audience-only gatherings, there’s a fee of $15,000 for accessing the Wolf Theatre. If the event involves both a live audience and recording/streaming, the cost increases to $20,000. For events held off-site, the charge is $7,500. Additionally, there’s an administrative fee of $5,000 for event management, as well as a member invitation fee. If live streaming was not chosen in conjunction with the recording package at the Wolf Theatre, an extra $2,500 will be required for streaming services.
Cris Abrego, head of the Television Academy, expressed that we’re living in a groundbreaking era for television and the Academy itself. He added that our members are leading the charge with advanced production techniques and imaginative narratives. At Televerse, we aim to gather the industry’s finest professionals, offer a vast array of captivating content, and create an exceptional platform for sharing fresh ideas and fostering innovation in the television world.
Registration for televerse.com is currently open until May 30. You’ll also find updates about the pricing of tickets and passes for festival activities soon. According to an announcement sent to Academy members, FYC events post-nomination will be free for voting members. Meanwhile, they can avail a member discount for non-FYC sessions such as panels, screenings, seminars, and workshops.
Televerse’s debut enters the expanding roster of TV festivals nationwide, with the Paley Center’s renowned Paley Fest, now on its 42nd year in Hollywood, already underway. Other forthcoming events include the ATX TV Festival in Austin (from May 29 to June 1), SeriesFest in Denver (April 29 to May 4), and the Banff World Media Festival (June 8 to June 11) in Banff, Alberta, Canada.
