As a film enthusiast with a soft spot for documentaries that inspire and educate, I am truly excited about the upcoming world premiere of “Turtle Walker” at Doc NYC. Having witnessed numerous films on conservation and environmental issues, I must say that this documentary stands out as it chronicles the life of an unsung hero, Satish Bhaskar, who dedicated his life to protecting endangered sea turtles in India.
The production companies HHMI Tangled Bank Studios, Tiger Baby, and Emaho Films have arranged for the debut screening of Taira Malaney’s “Turtle Walker” at Doc NYC.
In this documentary, I follow the life story of Satish Bhaskar, a passionate conservationist who dedicated his life to protecting sea turtles in India. Directed by Malaney for her first feature film, “Turtle Walker” delves into my journey across India’s coastlines during the late 1970s, where I immersed myself in studying and safeguarding endangered sea turtles. The movie also sheds light on how the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami affected the habitats of these remarkable creatures.
The company known as Submarine Deluxe, which specializes in hybrid sales, production, and distribution, has secured the rights to sell films. Led by brothers Dan Braun and Josh Braun, this successful firm boasts a history of achievements in documentary sales, having contributed to six out of the last twelve Academy Award-winning documentaries. Their impressive portfolio includes “American Factory,” “Citizenfour,” “20 Feet from Stardom,” “Man on Wire,” “The Cove,” and “Searching for Sugar Man.
Before its completion, the documentary “Turtle Walker” was honored with the esteemed Grand Teton Award at the Jackson Wild Media Awards. It also received other recognitions, such as being named the best natural history and wildlife pitch at Sunny Side of the Doc in 2019, and winning the emerging filmmaker award at DocEdge Kolkata in 2018.
The group behind the movie consists of producers Zoya Akhtar, Reema Kagti, Angad Dev Singh, Vikram Malaney, and Taira Malaney. Krish Makhija takes on the role of associate director and chief cinematographer, while Sam Rogers collaborates as co-writer and editor.
The film titled “Turtle Walker” is all set to make its debut at Doc NYC on November 17th. This documentary is the newest project added to HHMI Tangled Bank Studios’ collection, which already houses recent works like “Blue Carbon,” “Every Little Thing,” and “Wild Hope.” Previously, the studio has been involved in productions such as the Oscar-nominated film “All That Breathes.
Tiger Baby, established by Akhtar and Kagti, is broadening its horizons to encompass unscripted narratives. Meanwhile, Emaho Films, set up by Taira Malaney in 2016, specializes in crafting powerful, visually stunning nonfiction films for the big screen. Notably, “Turtle Walker” marks their debut into full-length documentary production.
Taira Malaney stated that Satish Bhaskar had an intense fascination with the underwater world. She explained that as humans, we naturally yearn to discover more. This desire drives us to question, learn, feel amazed, and ultimately develop compassion for the life that surrounds us. By showcasing Satish’s journey on a worldwide platform, our goal is to spark meaningful conversations about our collective oceans, encouraging people to join in the exploration and preservation efforts.
Jared Lipworth, head of HHMI Tangled Bank Studios, commented: “The breathtaking visuals and emotionally resonant narrative about this extraordinary individual and his influence on Earth will undoubtedly captivate global audiences.
