Trump’s Address to Congress Draws 36.6 Million Viewers, Up 13% From Biden’s 2024 State of the Union

Donald Trump‘s address to Congress reached an average of 36.6 million viewers on Monday.

The overall viewership exceeded Trump’s last State of the Union speech in 2024 by 13%, with a total of 32.2 million viewers. However, it didn’t surpass any of his previous State of the Union addresses during his first term as president. His highest viewership was in 2017 with 47.7 million viewers, followed closely by 45.6 million in 2018, then 46.8 million in 2019, and finally 37.2 million in 2020.

According to Nielsen’s ratings, the combined viewership for this year’s State of the Union address was across all major networks such as ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, Telemundo, Univision, PBS, CNN, CNNe, FOX Business, FOX News Channel, MSNBC, NewsMax and NewsNation. However, Biden’s 2024 total viewership excludes Merit Street as it is unlikely to have had a significant impact on the number of viewers who tuned in to watch his speech. The highest number of viewers for Biden’s State of the Union was in 2022 with 38.2 million viewers, while his first address in 2021 attracted 26.9 million and the one in 2023 garnered 27.3 million.

A large proportion of Trump’s viewers were older adults, according to Nielsen. Specifically, about 70.7% of viewers were 55 or older, while 20.5% fell between the ages of 35 and 54, and only 5.7% were between 18 and 34. Furthermore, viewership reached its highest point from 9:45 p.m. to 10 p.m. Eastern Time, surpassing the average of 36.6 million viewers to reach a peak of 37.9 million.

Although Nielsen recorded a combined viewership figure for the entire evening, Fox News’ coverage of the speech attracted an average of 10.7 million viewers, accounting for approximately 30% of the total audience.
