Trump Names Fox Host Jeanine Pirro as Interim U.S. Attorney for DC

Jeanine Pirro has decided to leave Fox News following a 14-year tenure, taking on the role of interim U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. This appointment was made public by President Trump on Thursday.

Jeanine Pirro, a former judge and district attorney from New York with a history of supporting Trump, started working at Fox News as a host in 2011. Her first show for the network was “Justice With Judge Jeanine,” which focused on legal news stories. More recently, she co-hosted “The Five,” which consistently ranks as the highest-rated program on cable news.

In a legal case for defamation worth $1.6 billion, Dominion Voting Systems accused Pirro and other Fox News hosts like Tucker Carlson of intentionally spreading misinformation on air, claiming that their voting machines were involved in fraud during the 2020 U.S. presidential election. In April 2023, Fox Network reached a settlement of $787.5 million to resolve this lawsuit. Pirro is also being sued in another case by Smartmatic, a voting technology company, whose suit remains active.

In a legal document, Dominion disclosed a deposition made by Rupert Murdoch, who at that time held the position of chairman for Fox News’ parent company Fox Corp. He stated that certain commentators within their network were promoting assertions about the 2020 election being fraudulent. When asked if Pirro had also endorsed these claims, Murdoch responded affirmatively, saying “I believe she did.

Following the decision to withdraw Ed Martin’s nomination as U.S. attorney for DC earlier today, I have selected Judge Jeanine Pirro instead. As reported by The New York Times, Martin had become one of the staunchest advocates for those involved in the January 6th riots. Facing growing resistance from Republican members of Congress, it seemed that Martin wasn’t receiving the backing I anticipated. Speaking to reporters at the White House, I praised Martin as a fantastic individual but expressed my belief that he wasn’t getting the necessary support. According to CNN, while Martin will no longer serve as U.S. attorney, he is expected to play a part within the Department of Justice “or whatever” capacity.

Trump declared that Pirro, aged 73, is now serving as the U.S. Attorney for Washington D.C., through a post on his personal social media site, Truth Social.

I’m happy to share that Judge Jeanine Pirro has been chosen as the temporary U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia,” Trump posted. “Jeanine previously served as an Assistant District Attorney in Westchester County, New York, and later held roles as a County Judge and District Attorney. In these positions, she made history by being the first woman to be elected. Throughout her tenure, Judge Jeanine was a strong advocate for crime victims.

Trump commented, “Jeanine possesses exceptional qualifications for this role and is recognized as among the top District Attorneys in the history of New York State. She’s truly exceptional. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Jeanine!

A representative from Fox News declared, “Jeanine Pirro has been an exceptional asset to ‘The Five’ for the past three years and a cherished figure across Fox News Media during her 14-year career. We’re delighted for her as she embarks on her new position in Washington.

Trump has been appointing Fox News personalities to roles within his administration, such as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, who once hosted Fox Business and was a cast member on MTV’s “The Real World: Boston” during the late 1990s.
