‘True Detective’ Creator Says ‘I Have Another Story’ for Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson to Return: ‘We’ve Talked About Doing It. I Think the Guys Are Open to It’

As a devoted cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that Nic Pizzolatto, the genius behind “True Detective,” recently spilled beans on the “Nothing Left Unsaid” podcast about a potential new tale. This tantalizing prospect revolves around the return of our beloved characters, Rust Cohle and Marty Hart, masterfully portrayed by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in the first season of HBO’s groundbreaking anthology series. Many of us who’ve followed this show still believe that Season 1 was its pinnacle. This unforgettable season garnered Emmy nods for both acting powerhouses, McConaughey included.

As a passionate film enthusiast, I’ve got another intriguing tale brewing for Cohle and Hart – a duo I can hardly wait to revisit someday! This new narrative is deeply rooted in character development, but let me clarify that it’s not yet committed to paper. It’s been lingering in my thoughts for quite some time now. The team and I have discussed the possibility of reuniting and bringing this idea to life, and I believe they’re open to the prospect. Whether we’ll actually get to see this project come to fruition remains to be seen.

Matt McConaughey and Woody Harrelson have maintained a strong friendship since their time on “True Detective,” and they’re now set to appear together in an upcoming Apple TV+ comedy series, playing fictionalized versions of themselves. McConaughey has often expressed his affection for working on “True Detective,” recently telling EbMaster that he cherishes his episodes from the series.

He declared his preferred time of year as, quite impartially, Season 1. He found it remarkable, exceptional television and an outstanding series. Every week, like many others, he would tune in on Sunday evenings, making it a special occasion for him. It was a pleasure to watch, and the anticipation of what was to come was forgotten amidst the excitement. The conversations around the water cooler on Monday mornings were something he cherished, as he too was left guessing about the future developments. All in all, it was one of TV’s grand events.

In the second season of “True Detective,” creator Nic Pizzolatto came back with actresses Rachel McAdams, Colin Farrell, and Vince Vaughn in leading roles, but it received harsh criticism from film critics. However, the third season featuring Mahershala Ali was better received in 2017. For the fourth season, “True Detective: Night Country,” Pizzolatto did not participate, and Jodie Foster stars alongside creator Issa Lopez.

Pizzolatto, on the podcast about his departure from the franchise, stated that he was the one who terminated his contract at the end of 2019. He added that if he had provided them with a solid script for another season of ‘True Detective’, he believes they would have agreed. However, he felt spiritually drained by walking in such darkness and dealing with such heavy topics. Additionally, he gained full custody of his daughter, which required him to be more present as a parent, so he had to step away from much of his work in 2020.

Nicolas Pizzolatto himself stepped back from the “True Detective” series, making it proper and fitting for HBO to proceed without him in Season 4. Currently, the network is working on a fifth season of “True Detective,” with “Night Country’s” Lopez set to resume his role as showrunner.
