Round about daybreak on May 3, folks at TRON DAO realized their X account was about as secure as a screen door on a submarine. Once the villain got a foot in the door, he started posting contract addresses, clicking “follow” on random strangers, and DMing like a teenager with a new crush.

We’re aware that our X account was compromised from 9:25 AM PST on May 2, 2025. During this time, an unauthorized party published a post containing a contract address (CA), sent direct messages (DMs), and followed various accounts unknown to us.

The hacker took “make yourself at home” a little too literally—sending messages and hitting “follow” like he was getting paid by the click. TRON DAO, in a fit of digital indignation, announced none of this was on their dance card.

“TRON DAO will never post contract addresses or send unsolicited DMs. If you received a DM from our account on May 2, please delete it and consider it the work of the attacker,” the protocol clarified.

The source of all this tomfoolery? Turns out, one of TRON’s own fell for a classic social engineering trick. “A member of our team was targeted in a malicious social engineering attack, which led to their account being compromised.” That’s company talk for, “We trusted Jed, and Jed clicked the wrong link.”

Even after getting their keys back, the damage was far from undone. The hacker kept offering posts from TRON’s main account to whoever was willing to hand over some crypto. A few unlucky folks actually took the bait—like fish at a frog gig—and lost their funds in the process.

Xu soothed TRON’s nerves, stating they’d put a hold on the suspect funds—provided, of course, TRON came armed with the right paperwork. If you want the freeze to last, better have your lawyer on speed dial.
