Tron: Ares is off to a solid start at the box office.
The new movie, Tron: Ares, is now showing in theaters nationwide. It’s the third installment in the Tron series, following the original 1982 film and 2010’s Tron: Legacy. Early box office numbers suggest Tron: Ares is performing a little better than Tron: Legacy did when it was released.
What is the box office projection for Tron: Ares?
Okay, so I just got the numbers in for *Tron: Ares*, and it kicked off with $4.8 million in previews. That includes those limited early Wednesday showings and the previews from Thursday. That’s a good start – it’s actually better than *Tron: Legacy* did back in 2010, which made $3.6 million. But it’s worth remembering *Legacy* had those classic midnight premieres, which were a big deal back then, so it’s not a *perfect* comparison. Still, a promising beginning for this new *Tron*!
Early screenings of Tron: Ares brought in $4.8 million, and the film is predicted to earn between $40 million and $45 million during its first weekend in theaters. If it reaches over $40 million, it will likely be the highest-grossing movie domestically that weekend. The previous Tron film, Tron: Legacy, earned $44 million on its opening weekend, but that number doesn’t account for inflation.
By Sunday, “Tron: Ares” is expected to earn between $85 and $95 million worldwide. However, because the movie cost $200 million to make, it will need to continue performing well in theaters for several weeks to become profitable.
Jared Leto plays Ares, an artificial intelligence program developed to be a powerful soldier. The new film, *Tron: Ares*, also features Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, Gillian Anderson, and Jeff Bridges, reprising his role as Kevin Flynn from previous *Tron* movies.
Joachim Rønning directed the film, working from a script by Jesse Wigutow. The story was created by Wigutow and David DiGilio. Jared Leto, Sean Bailey, Jeffrey Silver, Justin Springer, Emma Ludbrook, and Steven Lisberger all served as producers.
In Disney’s new film, *Tron: Ares*, a powerful A.I. program named Ares is dispatched from the digital world to the real world on a perilous mission, representing humanity’s initial contact with artificial intelligence.
