As a devoted fan of gripping action-noir films, I am absolutely thrilled to hear that Park Hoon-jung is set to begin production on “Tristes Tropiques.” This mastermind behind captivating narratives like “The Showdown,” “New World,” and “Night in Paradise” never fails to deliver a cinematic experience that leaves me breathless.
Director Park Hoon-jung, known for his popular action-noir movies, is set to start filming “Tristes Tropiques” this month. The film will be showcased to distributors during the Toronto International Film Festival by Finecut, responsible for managing distribution rights.
The movie traces a band of youthful killers linked to the Tristes Tropiques association, known for their expertise in jungle combat and ruled autocratically by a figure known as Master.
The movie shoot is set to take place in Thailand, starting in September and wrapping up by December. According to Finecut, the film will feature a globally diverse action-skilled cast, but specifics about the Korean or foreign aspects are not disclosed yet.
The film “Tristes Tropiques” is created by director Park, under his production company Gold Moon Film, in collaboration with Mindmark – a content IP company owned by the Shinsegae department stores and duty-free shopping group. Currently, its roster of productions also features “A Normal Family,” “Victory,” “Love Reset” and “Honey Sweet.”
For the fourth time, Finecut is managing a film by Park, having previously overseen the distribution rights for “New World” released in 2013, “V.I.P.” from 2017, and “The Witch: Parts 1. The Subversion” in 2018.
Park initially made a name for himself as a screenwriter, but later branched out into directing. He gained recognition for his screenplays in movies like “The Unjust,” directed by Ryoo Seung-wan, in 2010, and “I Saw the Devil,” directed by Kim Jee-woon. His directorial debut, “The Showdown,” also from 2010, was followed by the hit movie “New World” starring Lee Jung-jae. In 2021, his Netflix original film “Night in Paradise” was chosen for an out of competition slot at Venice. Recently, he has completed a feature film titled “The Childe” and a Disney+ series called “The Tyrant.”
At an unofficial market in Toronto, the film “Noise” – a chilling horror-thriller involving a woman with a hearing aid who is haunted by enigmatic sounds connected to her sister’s vanishing – will receive a screening. Additionally, this movie will compete at the Sitges fantasy festival.
In a new tone, Hong Sangsoo’s film “By the Stream,” which was recently unveiled in Locarno, will make its North American debut on the screens at Luminaries in Toronto. Once more, Finecut is responsible for managing the rights.
