Warning: SPOILERS lie ahead for Ghosts season 4!
In the fourth season of Ghosts, Trevor’s narrative takes an unexpected turn, signifying a significant change for the character. Asher Grodman notes that this development has been long-planned. This popular CBS comedy, modeled after the British series with the same name, revolves around a young couple inheriting a haunted house, inhabited by ghosts each with unique traits and unresolved issues. Trevor, a 1990s Wall Street playboy adored for his humorously arrogant demeanor and deep-seated emotions, sees his storyline evolve in Ghosts season 4 as it is unveiled he has a daughter.
As I sat down with Collider recently, I delved into the surprising twist of Trevor’s character in our show. This revelation not only alters his trajectory but also impacts his relationships with the other spirits in the house significantly. Intriguingly, the concept of Trevor having a child was first proposed by our brilliant showrunners, Joe Port and Joe Wiseman, as far back as last spring. Initially, it seemed like a humorous aside, but it gradually evolved into a profound emotional arc for Trevor, one that could indeed redefine his connections with the other ghostly inhabitants.
In the spring of last year, I had a strong feeling – if not certainty – that we would be embarking on this venture, as our showrunners, Joe Port and Joe Wiseman, extended an invitation for us to join their writers’ room with our thoughts and ideas, and shared their own. This exchange was incredibly helpful and delightful. At that time, they casually mentioned the possibility of Trevor having a child – either a son or a daughter – which filled me with joy.
In the early stages of producing Episode 5, often referred to as “Pete’s Wife” episode where Trevor briefly assumes fatherhood, or the “DILF” episode, I recall thinking, “We won’t be revisiting this for a while since it was a joke,” and let it simmer. However, now that it’s been four years, I can’t help but feel excited about revisiting the topic.
Trevor seems paradoxical when it comes to parenting, as his lifestyle often contradicts traditional parental roles. However, he has a strong social nature that could potentially make him a good parent, despite his party-loving, sometimes misogynistic ways. He values camaraderie and loyalty, which are traits typically associated with parenthood. Although I am not a parent myself, it’s intriguing to consider how these contrasting aspects of Trevor might blend in the context of family life. This duality in Trevor is both fascinating and perplexing.
When queried about Trevor’s ability to connect with ghost characters such as Hetty, Thor, and Pete, who, like his role, had offspring but didn’t get the chance to fully nurture them, Grodman stated that he thinks this aspect of their relationship will be developed further over time. He pointed out that although parenthood is a significant motif in the series “Ghosts”, it’s typically handled in a comically juvenile manner that aligns with the show’s overall feel. You can read more about what Grodman mentioned below.
Absolutely! It seems likely that we’ll explore and experiment with that aspect, and developments should be expected soon. Pete and Hetty did have the opportunity, but it’s debatable who was a better parent between the two. Perhaps neither, I’m not sure. One of the fascinating aspects of the series is its dual nature; it’s both a drama about mortality and a depiction of childhood, as we’re all essentially confined within this house. The mother has kept us confined, making it feel like children trapped in their rooms. Therefore, handling the complexities of parenthood is inevitable, but with the immaturity that comes from being left to our own devices.
What This Means For Trevor’s Relationships In Ghosts’ Future
Parenthood Could Change Trevor’s Relationships With The Others
Trevor assuming the role of a father sparks opportunities for richer emotional growth and complex relationships with the other spirits in the series. Though he’s typically known for his lively, carefree demeanor, this transformation may reveal a more sensitive aspect, making it easier for characters like Hetty, Pete, and Thor to connect with Trevor on a deeper level. This newfound common ground will allow the show to delve into how Trevor copes with his past and realizes what he has missed out on. As all of them lacked closure with their own children, they can assist Trevor in working through these issues together.
Grodman’s observation about the ghosts’ “juvenile” approach to serious matters reflects their stunted growth, a recurring theme in the show. Though they are spirits of adults, they remain stationary both physically and emotionally. This parental angle could result in more emotional and humorous scenes as Trevor grapples with understanding fatherhood in the afterlife. Whether it fosters closer bonds with his spectral companions or situations that urge him to evolve as a ghost, this plotline hints at intriguing development for Trevor that can be further expanded upon in Ghosts season 5.
