As a gamer with over two decades of action figure battles and cinematic showdowns under my belt, I can’t help but feel both excitement and trepidation about the potential G.I. Joe and Transformers crossover. Having grown up with these iconic franchises, I’ve always dreamt of seeing the two worlds collide on the silver screen, but not at the expense of their respective lore and characters.
Over the past two decades, the movie series based on G.I. Joe and Transformers have proven to be among the most successful. Currently, the Transformers films are in a prequel phase, while the G.I. Joe movies haven’t quite gained momentum yet. However, that could shift soon as G.I. Joe is set for a potential comeback, and there’s even talk of a possible crossover with those powerful robots, a concept hinted at in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts – something they’ve dabbled with before.
However, talking to the Transformers One producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, he explains to TopMob that there will be a crossover film, but not in the way we think of what crossover actually entails.
He warned, “You need to be cautious since the risk appears when you aim to comprehensively represent everything.” In other words, someone might end up feeling overlooked. Let me illustrate: Consider our movies often featuring a team on a mission to rescue the day. Are these heroes always Joes? Does that suffice for everyone’s satisfaction? I believe it doesn’t meet the mark. However, the concept of blending worlds, which I slightly oppose, is problematic because it seems to guarantee absolute unity between the realms.
In his own words, Di Bonaventura acknowledges previous errors where he overloaded the narrative with excessive plot points, neglecting sufficient character development. However, he’s determined to rectify this issue moving forward.
We’re working hard to strike a balance regarding Joes in a Transformers film, and it’s proving challenging, but rest assured, they will definitely appear. The debate lies in whether one of the Joe characters should be the main villain or not. Personally, I don’t feel comfortable with them as the primary antagonist because I’m unsure if their presence would pose enough danger to the robots.
In the upcoming movie Transformers One, you’ll hear the voices of Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry, Scarlett Johansson, Keegan-Michael Key, Steve Buscemi, Laurence Fishburne, and Jon Hamm. This action-packed adventure hits theaters on September 20th.
