Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for Tracker season 2, episode 17
This week, the series Tracker shifts its attention towards secondary characters, resulting in a captivating episode filled with potential surprises. However, it has left me pondering about how the last three episodes of this season will unfold. Last week unexpectedly saw the return of Bobby (Eric Graise) to the show without any grand welcome, which could have marked the exit of Randy (Chris Lee). Yet, episode 17 highlights the cousin of the tech genius, prompting him to seek Colter’s assistance.
This episode is titled “Memories,” and unlike those where cases are solicited through public rewards, this one originates from personal ties (leaving me puzzled about how Colter manages his finances). Randy’s former girlfriend seeks assistance when she awakens with no recollection, blood on her gown, and her closest friend gone missing. The narrative bears a resemblance to “The Hangover,” yet it fits remarkably well! Colter and Randy engage in some delightful banter throughout the story, which is particularly engaging. What makes this episode stand out is that there are no subplots to distract from the main action. Instead, there’s ample space for a sequence of surprises that are truly unforeseen – especially the wedding chapel twist!
This episode was terrific, yet it doesn’t provide much room for speculation due to its intense focus on the case of the week. What made it special for me is that it revolved around Colter (and Randy) tracking down the villains, which lies at the core of our series. However, this episode seems like one that would have fit better earlier in the season, as I’m beginning to ponder if there will be a grand Season 2 finale arc at all.
Randy Is So Good In This Episode That I’ll Be Devastated If He Doesn’t Return
It’s Not Clear If “Memories” Solidifies His Place, Or Acts As A Send-Off
This week, I found myself utterly captivated by the numerous unexpected turns in “Memories,” never able to guess where it would lead next. However, it was Randy who truly shone as the standout performer. Together with Colter, they formed an unlikely yet impressive duo, even though Colter insisted on working independently (as expected). Their back-and-forth exchanges were nothing short of remarkable.
Watching them collaborate to gain access to security footage live might not have been as entertaining as when Colter got trapped in a fast food restaurant’s office during the pilot episode of Tracker (“Klamath Falls”), but it aligns much better with where the series is currently headed. It also underscores that Colter could benefit from an in-person partner on occasion.
Among the highlights of Batman and Robin’s interaction was when Colter and Randy employed a secret phrase from an earlier chat to surprise the Weekly Bad Guy and his HenchDudes. This tactic not only fit well but also proved effective, making it all the more enjoyable to witness. Interestingly, Randy, who initially seemed like a Bobby doppelganger, has evolved into a captivating character in his own league, as this episode amply demonstrates.
It’s unclear whether “Memories” serves to secure Randy’s position within Team Tracker permanently or acts as a farewell to his character. Given that Bobby has returned, the role Randy once held is now occupied, and while they worked well together, it seems unusual for independent Colter to suddenly adopt him as a regular partner.
The episode concludes as Randy receives another opportunity with his former love, the one who slipped away. In a sense, it appears to be granting him a content ending and potentially wrapping things up. Nevertheless, I’m hoping he stays put. I’d like to witness more of his presence, not only for his interactions with Colter, but because the spat between him and Bobby last week (and his challenge of Bobby’s technical skills) was incredibly entertaining.
Reenie Is Missing – But It’s Actually A Refreshing Change
She (& Her Potential Relationship With Colter) Is Going To Return
In this week’s episode, Reenie (Fiona Rene) is noticeably absent, with no appearances at all. Velma (Abby McEnany) and Bobby each make an appearance towards the end, but there’s not even a hint about Team Tracker’s lawyer. It’s worth noting that this isn’t uncommon in the series.
For the initial part of season 1 and the first half of season 2, Reenie occasionally appeared on the show when necessary. However, her significant presence in recent episodes stands out noticeably. Lately, her storyline with her prominent client has been given as much focus as Colter’s, which is quite unexpected. So, what’s the deal?
Refreshingly, the narrative shifted its attention solely on one case, avoiding prolonged contemplation regarding Reenie and her ambiguous client’s predicament. Yet, it appears unusual that so much build-up was given to an intricate mystery, only for it to vanish entirely. On the brighter side, romance, particularly those involving mutual attraction but unfavorable timing, plays a significant role in “Memories”, hinting at potential developments in Colter’s romantic life.
It’s possible that Randy’s chat with Colter about “the one that got away” doesn’t necessarily refer to Reenie, even though their past relationship was emphasized in season 1. Lately, Reenie’s boyfriend has been appearing on screen (although not for the last couple of episodes, which is intriguing), and Colter had his moment with Billie (Sofia Pernas) in “The Grey Goose”. This suggests a shift in direction. However, since Colter isn’t revealing anything about it, we’ll have to wait and see if a romantic storyline develops. I’m looking forward to it!
Up Next: Collision Is A Mystery
Where Will Tracker’s Final Three Episodes Go?
Next week’s show title is “Collision”, but we don’t know what it entails yet as it’s standard for Tracker to have brief episode titles. With just three episodes remaining in the season, I can’t help but ponder if the series will culminate in a larger storyline or if we should expect three individual episodes to conclude the season.
In upcoming events, there are subtle indications suggesting that romance could play a role in Colter’s life. This week’s installment seems to strongly imply that this potential romantic involvement might be from his past rather than something new. However, this doesn’t provide much clarity as it could either mean the reappearance of Billie, due to their history, or it could deepen Colter’s relationship with Reenie. With Billie potentially returning and the recent focus on Reenie’s client and his shady activities, the climax could revolve around a complex case involving this client. Yet, the synopsis for the finale has been disclosed, and it doesn’t seem to involve Reenie or her work.
In the story, Colter goes back to Echo Ridge for the purpose of probing into the vanishing of the diner proprietor. However, his investigation leads him to an astonishing revelation: a long-buried abduction case and a startling truth about the town’s history that shocks everyone.
Ultimately, the intriguing Shaw Family Mystery appears to have been pushed aside in the second half of the series, taking a less prominent role.
From what I can gather, it seems like the current state of events makes me suspect that Tracker might not be focusing on a specific narrative at the moment. However, if the standalone episodes continue to captivate us as they did this week and in last week’s chilling “The Mercy Seat” episode, I’d be perfectly content with this approach.
New episodes of Tracker season 2 air on CBS each Sunday at 8pm ET.
