Toys ‘R’ Us Live-Action Movie in the Works With Story Kitchen (EXCLUSIVE)

As an enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that Story Kitchen and Toys”R”Us Studios, two powerhouses in the world of entertainment and toys, are joining forces to create a captivating live-action movie!

Story Kitchen co-founders Dmitri M. Johnson & Mike Goldberg expressed their excitement about a new project, stating, ‘Toys’R’Us remains a significant part of our collective childhood memories, shaping who we are today.’ As children of the 80s, they feel privileged to collaborate on a movie that will embody the essence of imagination, exploration, and fond recollections associated with Toys’R’Us.

As a passionate cinephile, I’m excited about an upcoming project that aims to rekindle the magical, childhood wonder we all cherish, wrapping it up in a contemporary, high-octane adventure story. This tale will leverage the timeless appeal and rich history of the Toys”R”Us brand, which has been a staple in the toy industry for over 70 years.

Kim Miller Olko, president of Toys’R’Us Studios, expressed that this project, being the company’s debut film, presents an exhilarating chance to transfer the enchantment of our brand onto the big screen. It will be a voyage as limitless as play itself, stirring up the thrilling feeling of wonder that defines Toys’R’Us. This tale will seize the imagination, excitement, and joy that have made Toys’R’Us a go-to spot for children from all walks of life.

The project shares similarities with movies like “Night at the Museum,” “Back to the Future,” and “Big,” as well as popular toy-based stories such as “Jumanji” and “Barbie.” The producers are currently discussing with potential filmmakers, and further details including casting and additional information will be revealed in the upcoming months.

Johnson, Goldberg, Timothy I. Stevenson, and Elena Sandoval are set to collaborate with Story Kitchen, while Olko contributes from Toys“R”Us Studios as well.

Significantly, Story Kitchen, a company known for transforming non-conventional intellectual properties like video games into films and television shows, has built a reputation in this area. This journey began when Johnson produced the movie adaptation of Sega’s “Sonic the Hedgehog” for Paramount. Current projects under Story Kitchen’s belt include adaptations of the “Tomb Raider” series, such as the animated Netflix TV show and live-action TV and film projects at Amazon MGM Studios.

Currently, the company is engaged in creating several projects: “Just Cause” (for Universal), directed by Ángel Manuel Soto and co-produced by 87North; “Ruiner” (also for Universal), helmed by Wes Ball; “Streets of Rage” (for Lionsgate) with Escape Artists serving as co-producers; “Toejam & Earl” (for Amazon MGM Studios) featuring Steph Curry as co-producer; “It Takes Two” (also for Amazon MGM Studios); and “SIFU” (for Netflix). Story Kitchen holds a first-look TV deal with Amazon, as well as a first-look agreement for animated films at DreamWorks Animation. They are represented by WME, Pryor Cashman, and TriplePoint PR.
