As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in digital worlds since the days of 8-bit graphics and cassette tapes, I must say that the announcement of Toy Story 5 at D23 has sent waves of nostalgia coursing through my veins. The first Toy Story was not just a groundbreaking film; it was a gateway to a whole new universe of storytelling that pushed the boundaries of what animation could achieve.
In the upcoming year, we’ll celebrate the 30th anniversary of Toy Story, the groundbreaking CGI animated film that solidified Pixar’s status in the industry. At D23, the next installment of this beloved franchise was revealed. Titled Toy Story 5, it is set to hit theaters in 2026, with renowned Pixar director Andrew Stanton at its helm.
I’ve been part of the Pixar family since the inception of Toy Story, and I was a key contributor to the scriptwriting for all four of its predecessors. Prior to that, I shared the helm as co-director on A Bug’s Life. Later on, I stepped up to direct Finding Nemo, WALL-E, and Finding Dory solo.
At D23, during his on-stage appearance, Stanton unveiled the initial promotional art for Toy Story 5, offering a glimpse of a fresh peril looming over the toys – the ominous advancement of Technology.
Here, it appears Bonnie is tucked beneath her bed’s blankets, holding her tablet, while the toys seem dejected and disheartened. Interestingly, Woody seems to have returned to his companions, despite having embarked on a new journey with Bo Peep in Toy Story 4.
As per Stanton’s explanation, traditional toys are now confronting an existential crisis due to Bonnie’s intense interest in modern electronics. Her once beloved toys have lost their charm compared to the allure of technology. Stanton referred to this shift as a blend of ‘toys and tech,’ suggesting that 50 Buzz Lightyears being trapped in toy mode could potentially lead to complications within the movie.
